Do Yankee fans completely go wheels off?

Worst case scenario for Yankees:
Cano signs with Seattle
Kuroda plays in Japan
A-Rod wins his appeal

You end up with
3B: A-Rod
SS: Jeter
2B: Kelly Johnson
1B: Teixeira

And almost no pitching.

Yanks sign Choo and go after Tanaka. Trade for Aramis Ramirez. KJ to second.

See...Cashman ain't ****.

As much as I don't see Cano going to the M's, I don't see the players association looking very fondly at him if he passes up the higher contract.......

Signing KJ was certainly done to cope with any potential panic.

Choo would go great with:
- Soriano
- Gartner
- Ichiro
- Wells (DH)

The OF in itself adds humor.

Who could they possibly trade to get Aramis Ramirez?

Tanaka may not be posted. Even if he is posted, with only a $20M posting fee, it will invite many more suitors, which, IMO, may mean teams are willing to spend more on the actual player.

They'd have some room by not signing Cano, but A-Rod would still be a burden.

They needed a middle infielder either way.

Apart from last year when the big three all got hurt together, that's been/would've been a pretty competitive group. The 95 win 2012 team seems so long ago, but it really wasn't.

I'm not sure why you left Ellsbury out of the outfield, but if he's healthy he's a very good player.

Huge IFs for sure, but if they're healthy/recovered, that's probably a competitive bunch.

Yes, A-Rod is a doucebag, some of their contracts suck, and I think a lot of Yankee fans have been in a downward spiral for a while. But that could be a competitive group nonetheless.

I'm sure the Yankees are still looking to add to the roster.

remember folks, only the yankees have any holes in their roster

if Cano, who wants the money the yankees aren't dumb enough to give him, wants to go, who cares? Josh Hamilton left, pujols left, Prince left. Everyone leaves

Heyman now reporting Seattle is pissed because Cano didn't accept the offer.

Cashman loving this.

Lol. It seems jay-z overplayed his hand.

Dumb move by cano letting jay-z cut his teeth with his career.

They still could spend $25-50 more/year in payroll. I expect a big push for Beltran and/or Choo. Hoping for a Colon signing as well.

M's have protected first rounder, so they only lose a second and likely gain a pick from Morales.

With the protected pick and signing one guy, now is the time to go after others.

Expect Nick Franklin to be traded as well.

2013 WAR:

Cano - 6.0
Ells - 5.8

Per Fangraphs.

cano is a HOF 2B, but at that price, there's not a chance in hell i'd match if i were the yankees. that's just too many years. he's going to be 41 when that contract expires.
ORAggieFan

Who cares about the money in 10 years. That is minimal by then.

The M's knew they needed to overpay. They wanted Fielder and Hamilton and people just weren't going to sign with Seattle because they don't win. They had to go overpay for someone and this is not a bad guy to do it on.

Now other guys, someone like a Beltran, will listen. And butts will get in the seats.

They have a ton of money owning the TV Network. They're sitting as good if not better financially than Texas is.

So? Since 2010 he's #2 in WAR behind only Cabrera.

Also, the difference is Cano hits. Hitters age well. Worst case he DH's some and even plays some 1B. Look at Beltran, he still hits. It's speed that Ellsbury has and you lose speed much earlier than you lose hitting.

I think the rest of the offseason will put that theory to the test pretty well.

I think a lot of folks think it's the park and the market that players don't like...thus the massive overpay to get a guy there.

If it's just about winning then we'll see those other guys actually in play.

Relax. I'd think you'd be excited yet you seem defensive?

Anyway, I was just looking at recent production and the effect on the NYY. That's all.

Back to your talking points.

he's not a byproduct of YS III. That guy is a HOF hitter no matter what park he's in

I am excited. And I know it's an overpay that could haunt them. I remember this feeling when the signed Beltre and Sexson and I know how that turned out. But, I get it. Now the big question is who else. Money to spend and trade chips available. I just hope it doesn't involve Tai Walker for Price.

Yeah it's an overpay but, to your point, it's better to be overpaying for Cano then watching Jim Johnson get traded for Jemile Weeks in a salary dump.

I think trading Walker would be stupid.

so it's cool to overpay when any team but the yankees does it

The Yankees habitually do it. Teams like Seattle don't and it's far more exciting as a fan, i'm guessing, to see them go for it like this.

Meanwhile the Yankees always have that approach to fall back on when things don't go well.

The stakes are different.

I laugh at the overpay comments. Pretty much everyone is an overpay by definition. The only reason overpaying matters is when you have a fixed budget and it affects other moves, like it would with Oakland or TB. The Yankees have no budget say an overpay doesn't matter.

That said, F the Yankees.
