6-0 tonight and the Pirates have already won the 5 game series after the 3rd game. Cards in a bit of a tailspin. Somehow need to take the next 2 and sweep.

as an aside...this is what I miss about doubleheaders from back in the day...a team could gain 2 games in one day

5-4 tonight in an outstanding game!

Cards had the lead from the top of the 1st throughout, and the Pirates kept chipping away as the Cards would add another. They ultimately tied it, then in the bottom of the 8th some great baserunning by Neil Walker allowed him to score on a Russel Martin basehit the very next at bat.

Shark Tank with 5 hours of dominant relief. 4 in a row against the Cards.

The Pirates will have a 2.5 game lead on the first day of August, and will leave this series at worst 1.5 up on the Cardinals in the NL Central.

WOW!

this is shades of the 2006 "Boston Massacre" when the yankees rolled into Fenway and swept a 5-game series

13-0 STL in the 8th. Yikes. Had a feeling this would be a loss since Morton was the starter, and Hurdle said today he needed to rest some arms in the bullpen so some guys were unavailable. Kinda not what you need on a Morton night. Sounded like if he had to use the pen with any real length, he was gonna serve up a few from the back end and make em deal with it.

Oh well. I'll take 4-1 series win over the Cards.

after 5 straight, they cool off with 3 consecutive losses, however St. Louis only makes up 1 game in the standings.

Up 3 games on the cards and their 3 game series in St. Louis begins tonight.

well after Marte choked away the win last night my Battered Pirates Syndrome kicked in bigtime. But what a response tonight. Liriano was lights out.

5-1 win and back up 3 games in the central.

Yea, last night was much better. My inlaws arrived and they are Card fans as is my wife. She supports all my other teams, Ags, Steelers, Pens, but only partially supports the Pirates. I allow the Cards in my house, but only mow the lawn in any Card gear they give me. And my 3 boys are slowly tilting towards he Pirates.

11 wins from .500!!!

77-55, .5 back of St. Louis.

Been a pretty meh stretch the last 2 weeks. The Cards have picked it up too, as have the Reds.

The next 13 games have 4 against the Brewers, 6 against the Cards, and 3 against the Rangers

Come 9/12, we'll know all we need to know about the Pirates this year.

I'm hoping like hell they'll win the division. The WC is nice, but a division championship would do this organization so much.

The acquisition of Byrd yesterday was also big. 3 run homer on his first night tonight.

80-57.

1 game ahead of St. Louis. 3.5 ahead of Cincinnati.

2 games away from the first winning season in 21 years.

Also picked up Justin Morneau to add to the roster.

Things looking good. The playoffs(which are all but assured) are nice...but with this 2 wild card, 1 game playoff system, the division really should be the goal from here on out.

81-57, 2 games up on St. Louis...

oh and the Pirates officially end the streak. Their first non-losing season in 21 years!

Couldn't be happier as a Pirates fan. Byrd and Morneau were both huge tonight. Great pickups the last week.

Now we got a division to win!

I work with a guy that is a Pittsburgher and a die hard Pirates fan. The only thing that I know about him (outside of his work stuff) is that he loves the Pirates and he wears a bowtie everyday. We always talk about baseball (and only baseball) whenever we run into each other.

I ran into him in the elevator earlier and he was wearing his Pirates bowtie and was absolutely beaming. You'd think he'd just had a new baby or something of that nature.

He couldn't wait to launch into how excited he was about the Bucs.

I love baseball fans.

88-65. 1 game back of St. Louis. 1 game ahead of Cinci.

Pitt has 3 vs. Cinci, then 3 @ chicaco and 3 @ Cinci to finish the season.

Cinci has the aforementioned 6 against Pitt with NYM sandwiched in between.

St. Louis has 3 @ Milwaukee, 3 vs. Washington, and 3 vs. Chicago to end it.

Hoping against hope the Pirates can somehow steal the division from St. Louis but I doubt that happens given the remaining schedules.

Pirates are 10-9 against the Reds and they are only a game up with overall record, so these final 6 against them will decide who would get home field in the WC playoff.

They coughed it up to the Reds late last night, while the Cards squeak one out against Milwaukee!

Cards 2 up!

With the season over the Pirates finished with the 5th best record in baseball at 94-68, 3 games behind the Cardinals in the NL Central.

Absolutely fantastic accomplishment and I couldn't be happier as a Pirates fan.

Now tonight is the game that almost makes it feel like you didn't make the playoffs if you lose...hope Liriano brings his A stuff.

I hate this new wildcard scenario. Either add a 5 game series or another round or do away with it. 1 game is dumb.

IMO a five game series is far dumber. I actually like the single game scenario for the wild card but could live with a three game series, any more than that has the division winners sit for far too long.

It's fine the way it is. It brings joy to 2 more fanbases each year. If you want a 5 game series, win the division!
