Cubs/Cardinals "Rivalry"

Can someone explain this faux "rivalry?" I can't even name a single memorable game between the two since i've been alive (nor could any of my cubs fan friends at work), nor have the cubs had any prolonged stretch of relevance since i was born that even makes it some worthwhile rivalry. It reminds me of the UT/Rice "Rivalry" game that's played every year. I can easily name an epic UT/OU rivalry game, UT/A&M, hell, even a UT/TTU game (the 21 point comeback a few years back comes to mind).

What i'm getting at is that this "rivalry" was something I am going to guess the media created decades ago, and cubs fans are just taught to hate the cardinals and vice versa because their parents/friends told them to, not because they consistently fight for contention, players, etc. Reminds me a lot of the A&M/Baylor "rivalry." That's not a rivalry, it's just a game played yearly that the aggies always win, and while there are a couple of memorable games (2006, 2005 come to mind), there really isnt any sort of universal hate between the two schools. I see this exact same thing amongst my cub fan friends, who are quite knowledgeable. They hate stl because they have 11 titles, not because the cardinal red makes them want to vomit. that's what makes a true rivalry, and I don't see it.

i think its comparable to most divisional rivalries in the nfl, like kansas city vs oakland, or detroit vs chicago...if they weren't old franchises and in the same division, they wouldn't be considered rivals at all

Sosa-McGwire has gotta count for something.

It's about proximity. Which is what fuels "rivalries" in baseball. It will become a stronger rivalry again once Chicago improves. Other than that, it's only something you understand if you're apart of the fan base.

To be honest, its a friendly rivalry, from my experience that is. I went to plenty of games at old busch stadium before I moved to TX and all my interactions with Cubs fans were good ones. Never experienced a game @ Wrigley though, so I can't speak from that side of the fence. My experience at the WS was decent, but lemme tell you Houston fans act like they are apart of a heated rivalry with Cardinal fans, although there is definitely nothing there. Just wanna be apart of something I guess?

You're probably right in the fact that yeah, there haven't been the kind of division titles, world series trips battled out between the Cubs and Cards like the Yanks and Sawx. No doubt. To me, it's more of a fan rivalry - the proximity, division to go with the history of both clubs (most of the bigger games I belive came from before all of us were a thought). There is just a lot of tradition and pride with the two teams and the fans. Two great baseball towns. Great fan bases. Etc...

here's a good test...

since the NL went to 2 divisions in 1969 and then 3 divisions in 1994...how many have times the cubs and cards finished 1-2 in the division? (i.e. battled into September for the title)

the Sosa vs. McGwire was a complete fraud as we have since learned. Appropriate reference earlier of "faux"

Actually most Cub and Cardinal fans I've met have never lived in either city so their fans are more likely the ones that just want to be a part of something.

Zambrano threw at Edmonds out of frustration and got tossed awhile back...but I guess he does that to every team.

2009, Cardinals ran away with it after they were tied in early August.

2007, STL finished 3rd, but were 1 game back on Sept 7...Cubs reeled off 4 wins in the next 9 days, including a make up game.

2003, three way race with Houston, STL finished 3 back of Cubs...Cubs entered September 1.5 games back of STL and HOU, then won 4 from a 5 game series with STL to open the month and won the division

Just some recent races, there's been some good stuff here and there, the Cubs just havn't been consistently good.

So its not New York-Boston, but anytime two terrific fan bases and the talent that's been through both clubs, and the interesting back-stories that are there, its something more than your ordinary game when they meet up.

A shame the Astros are leaving now that they might have competent leadership, like the Cubs, they've had some good three way races.
