Whether Morey promised it or not, multiple sources indicated Harden was under the impression he would opt out and re-sign with Philadelphia on a max deal this summer.
---------

Going back to the Minnesota illegal deal with Joe Smith, Minnesota had an under the table deal with Smith to take 3 one-year deals for 2-3mm each, then after the third deal, Minnesota would have the Bird rights, and would give him a 7y86mm deal. Joe Smith's agents had a falling out and exposed the deal. Joe Smith turned down an 80mm extension with Golden State prior to signing with Minnesota for $2mm. Joe Smith made a total of 62mm in his NBA career.

Minnesota lost 5 first round picks (later reduced to 4), fined 3.5mm (10% of the total salary cap number) and Joe Smith's contract was voided, so no one had bird rights. This happened after the off-season frenzy, so no one had money to offer Smith and he took a low deal with Detroit for one year.

Harden declined a $47.5mm one year deal to take a 33mm contract with one year option for 35mm.

If the league finds that Harden agreed to the under the table deal, he would likely have that 35mm for this year voided and no one in the league has any cap space anymore. There are 7 teams with open roster spots and every single one of those teams is well into the luxury tax.

I feel like the league would come down even harder on Morey than they did on Minnesota, However, Philly doesn't control their 25, 26, 27, or 28 first round draft picks.

Hard to believe that Morey and Harden didn't work out a deal prior to Harden leaving all that money on the table. But Harden is never going to admit to it and Morey sure won't either.

Harden just got fined $100K by the NBA for his comments.

I think the NBA doesn't want to find a contract promise. All of Harden's teammates are out there saying there was a handshake deal that Morey went back on.

Harden was interviewed by the NBA and said his comments were solely about Morey saying he would trade Harden then not trading.
