Mavs may make a pick tonight. I didn't do near as much draft study this year as I did last year. Always nice to be in a position when you aren't taking big swings at the top of the draft.

Guys I would want if we traded up: Jaylen Wells, Pelle Larsson, Melvin Ajinca, and Jalen Bridges. Wells and Larsson if you really want shooting and Ajinca and Bridges may be better wing fits. Bridges is really intriguing. Larsson would be a classic Mavs pick for obvious reasons.

Guys I would want the Mavs to draft at 58: Anton Watson (may be my favorite guy for the Mavs in my limited draft study), Ajay Mitchell, Justin Edwards, and Keshad Johnson.

The Mavs are likely going to try to buy a pick to move up but if that doesn't work, I think they pick Jaylin Williams. He's a 6'8 F from Auburn. He's a senior who improved every year and shot 39% from 3pt. He has great size and kind of does it all. And since he's older he may be able to contribute sooner than later.

If the Mavs stay at 58, that's who I believe they will (and should) target.

I'd dig that pick

Sounds like you have intel about both strategy and target. Interesting, because I hadn't come across that name in my short amount of time doing draft stuff.

I don't remember much of him at Auburn, but the numbers from this past year are really good and the 2PT% is crazy good.

Well it's public knowledge he recently had a pre draft workout for the Mavs....

(but I also heard from someone plugged in who says Jaylin got the nod if the Mavs stand pat)

Forgot to also add that he may get picked at 54 by Boston first. If that's the case, I'm not sure who the Mavs would pick.

he ate our lunch in the January game with 22 points...good clip here where he says he didn't want to lose to us again and gave Wade mad props

Bridges falling is interesting.
I don't see the Mavs having much interest in Beekman and McCullar is a jack of all trades, master of none. Wouldn't be mad though.

Otherwise, still intriguing prospects on the board.

Looks like Twitter got hacked and locked out Shams and Woj but the Mavs apparently moved up to draft
Melvin Anjinca

lol stash player. Likely won't see him anytime soon. Literally nothing but 3&D. Hes not an athlete (think he had a 31 inch vert lol) but can shoot, rebound, and defend.

Well I had Ajinca on my list above, but I'm kinda disappointed the pick wasn't either Watson or Bridges with both those guys on the board. Bridges wasn't drafted though, so small chance we could let him play summer ball with us to see what's up.

Celtics took Watson, so you know he's going to be a good player.

Ajinca probably the higher floor pick than those guys but the lower ceiling.

His cousin or brother played for the mavs, but he didn't do Jack ***** Alexis Ajinca. Then again…… there's a huge difference between Giannis and his bro / Lebron and his son. Just because Alexis sucked doesn't mean this kid will.

THJ for Grimes trade is done

So back in 2018, the Mavs traded 2FRPs to acquire KP and THJ. 1 of those FRPs was used by the Knicks to draft Grimes. The Mavs just traded THJ for Grimes, thus effectively reclaiming a FRP.

Woo! We won the trade!

We would need to get a lot more for pain and suffering damages...

Am I safe in assuming that this is one of those moves to set up another move? Resign DJJ?

Yeah it got us a slightly better player but it also freed up about $12 million in cap room.

Appears slightly more than that:

So in an ideal world, DJJ would agree to sign for the MLE and we can use the partial BAE to get a proven vet (Eric Gordon, Nic Batum, or maybe even Bullock?).

Bol Bol so you can have Wemby at home?

Don't know if the Lakers are keeping him, but SA boy Taurean Prince would be a nice fit.

I don't know how much Naji Marshall will get, but some analysts are saying a 2+1 starting at $5M. He's a steal there imo.

Gary Harris is probably a tax-payer MLE or lower, but can give some solid minutes as a D&3.

Spurs former first rounder Lonnie Walker was really hot for a lot of last season as a shooter. He was only on a vet min. He's a spot up guy and little else. Shot 47/43 pre-ASB. Maybe a backup option if you just want a shooter.

He's not an athlete? My mind immediately goes to Uwe Blab and Wang Zhu-Zhu.

haha not by NBA standards. A 31' inch vertical is pretty terrible. In the entirety of the 2024 NBA draft combine, only 6 players had a shorter vertical leap. To put it in perspective, Zach Edey's vertical was 31.5 inches lol.

Everyone at the European combine had a significantly lower vertical and speed/agility tests than the USA combine. There was a lot of discussion about it at the time, not sure what the conspiracies and conclusions were. I think Risacher was 31 as well. The PG the Spurs drafted from Spain was 29.

There is no way Zach Edey can get nearly 3 feet off the ground. "Skying for a rebound" would put his hands above the backboard . . .

Man the Raptors second round pick next year is really valuable. It's going to be a top 35 pick… That pick was probably required to get the deal done, just really sucks. THJ hosed us hard in so many ways.
