I like the proposal that the team has the option to take the ball out of bounds instead of shoot free throws. "The Clippers have chosen to decline the free throws and take the ball out of bounds."

I like the option where every player learns how to play basketball.

These guys are making millions and even tens of millions to shoot a ****ing basketball. Learn to make your damn free throws. If you can't then it is your own damn fault.

Exactly. Start shooting granny style and everybody will be highly entertained.

All it takes is 1 poor FT shooting big man to start the granny shot phenomenon. Swallow your pride and help your team.

Get ready, folks. Change is coming

quote:
"I'm increasingly of the view that we will be looking to make some sort of change in that rule this summer," Silver told USA Today Sports. "Even for those who had not wanted to make the change, we're being forced to that position just based on these sophisticated coaches understandably using every tactic available to them. It's just not the way we want to see the game played." - Adam Silver

Great news. The NBA is in the entertainment buisness and the Hack-a-______ strategy is hurting the entertainment value of their sport. Silver realizes that we don't want to watch that stuff. Hopefully the fix is something balanced.

I'm not a fan. It's like when high school teams score first then just dribble out the clock. Yes, it's within the rules but it's boring as hell to watch.

Its actually nothing like that.

Changing the rules, because a handful of players can't do their job is stupid.

Strictly entertainment wise, it's exactly like that.

You are missing the point. NBA basketball was never supposed to be a free throw shooting contest. Would it be nice if everyone worked hard enough or was talented enough to shoot 70% from the line...sure. But that is not reality. Silver has personally been at games where the hack-a-_______ strategy has been employed. It sucks the life out of the stadium and makes us fans wonder why we are paying money to watch this. You can't let your product go to **** when this particular strategy makes your product unwatchable.

I hope they ban 3 pointers next, Curry making everyone look stupid night after night isn't good for the league.

Players are only shooting 30-45% from the curved line.

The irony of this is that if it were up to Pop, he'd get rid of the 3 point line too.

I think watching Curry hit all of those 3s is actually pretty entertaining, unlike watching a free throw contest.

But he's missed 274 3 point shots. Harden missed 270, Lowrey missed 210. Missed baskets are bad. So many bricks.

Cousins missed 113 FTs. Dwight 131. Drummond 167. Combined that's far less than the brick layers above.

Doesn't matter. If you start changing rules to cover up for team deficiencies, then you're easentially defeating the point of playing the game.

The Spurs play good team defense that slows the game down and keeps the score low. In an effort to stop this blasphemy and make the game more entertaining, there needs to be rules that prevent the Spurs from playing defense.

The above theoretical argument has the same problems:

(1) The game is slowed down
(2) The game is not as entertaining
(3) The rule should be changed based on a very, very small portion of the league having issues.

Honestly this isn't due to the spurs. Pop kick started the craze but it's the fouling 5 times to start a quarter and have 12 minutes of bonus that probably tipped the league to do something.

As much as the fans of teams that are targeted by this hate it, it's kind of like my facetious example of banning 3 pointers or the curve ball in baseball. Man, guys just can't hit a certain pitch so we should ban it.

Precisely, Robin.

I'm less concerned about the entertainment factor and more concerned about whether it's a real basketball play. Intentional fouls aren't much different than flops in my book, and I think they should both be against the rules.

I'm not concerned about entertainment and I have the opposite opinion as you. If you have a weakness in your game, don't whine when it's exploited. They don't ban sliders in baseball or Taking a knee in football or screening the goaltender in hockey.

To make a more accurate comparison it would be like banning the intentional walk in baseball or taking a knee in football.

My team probably benefits more from this tactic than any other. I'm not whining, I just happen to like actual basketball more than lawyering the rules.

It's more like an intentional walk than a slider, and an intentional walk is not a baseball play either.

I don't know if this would help or hurt, but maybe the NBA should resuscitate the old "3 to make 2" rule that they had for back court fouls when a team is in the penalty. There might be some epically bad FT shooting numbers, but you'd expect to make 1 out of 3, at least. Just spitballing...I hate watching the game slow to a crawl, and it's pathetic that some guys can't shoot FTs better.

I think they should make a rule that "if after 100 FTAs on the season, if you are not shooting 60%, you now must shoot the rest of your FTs granny style". Would be awesome.

And if you're shooting over 80%, you have to shoot them backwards over your head.

Lebron from that same story.

quote:
At the end of the day, it's a strategy of the game and whatever it takes to win," James said. "If that's a part of the game and you have a guy that is a bad free throw shooter and you put him on the line, that's a part of strategy. That's no different from a guy that can't shoot well from the outside and you try to make him shoot bad from outside or if a guy is turnover-prone and you put pressure on him. It's all part of strategy.
