Since the Rondo experiment seems to be over, who do the Mavs get to run the point next year?

I'm not any of these FAs seem that impressive.

I'm not sure. I looked at that list and there is not really a realistic option that would be good.

Damn dude. Mavs are 0-2 and going nowhere yet they still live in your head.

So discussion about an NBA team's point guard situation is off-limits on the Basketball Other board? You act like this board is littered with Mavs posts, all started by the OP when neither is true. Failing to see what caused you to leave the comment that you did.

How is it a pointless thread? I'd say it'd a legit question for them and maybe they wanted input from others and not just other mavs fans.

Houston fans are ruining this board, why don't y'all take yalls little circle jerk to the Houston board...and While you're at it take whoever the mod is with you.

Patrick Beverly.

Westbrook, Paul, or Curry most likely.

I believe the Mavs have expressed interest in Pat Beverley in the past. He would be a good fit I think. It's my understanding that Rockets want to bring in Sergio Llull so it may work out for both teams.

So Rockets fans make fun of the Mavs fans because of their lack of posts this season, then blast them because they post about their team? You guys are tough to keep up with. Maybe staff should just ban the OP since this wasn't a Harden love post?

On the topic in the OP.... I don't think the Mavs need a game changer at the pg position. Remember in the first month or 6 weeks of the season when the Mavs had the most efficient offense? Who was running point for them? Devin Harris and Raymond Felton? Get somebody that lets Monta shoot the ball and doesn't allow the opposition to clog lane for drives and Dirk elbow jumpers.

The Mavs need a PG who can shoot the 3 and who can move without the ball when Ellis is facilitating. Whether that will come through the draft or free agency, I'm not sure. I don't have a list of upcoming free agents, so I'm not sure who is available. But Rondo was just a terrible fit for Carlisle's system, because he is not good at either of the above things mentioned

I don't follow all contract statuses and cap stuff closely, but as of now, this is what we have going into next year, right?

Under contract: Dirk, Parsons, Devin
Team option: Powell - cheap enough; any reason Mavs wouldn't keep?
Player options: Ellis, Felton, Aminu - good paychecks; any reason they would leave?
Unrestricted: Tyson, Jefferson, Charlie, JJ, James, Smith, Amare

Since there aren't many good FA options, why not roll with Devin, Felton, and re-sign JJ?

I'm guessing Devin Harris will the job by default.

Felton is horrid. The Rockets destroyed the Mavs by putting Felton and Dirk in pick and roll.

The Mavs ideally need someone who can defend and shoot 3s. Beverley fits that bill even if he isn't a top of the line PG.

I would hate to see Bev in a Mavs uniform, but I can see Cuban doing the same thing he did with Parsons and money whipping Bev to the point where we either let him walk, or we limit ourselves financially by matching it

Would Bev start over Harris?

I think so. I think Harris is better off the bench at this point in his career.

as much as i love Pat Bev's hustle, his defensive capability is not enough to overcome his deficiencies at running an offense or producing offense of his own.

I don't want Beverly as a starter. Doesn't do enough of what a PG needs to do. Very little offense. Doesn't make anyone better. Most of his value is in his defense. He works in Houston because of Harden's ability to essentially run the point.

beverley is a bench guy masquerading as a starter. The rockets badly need sergio llull to work out

I agree. He's a 3 and D PG. That isn't a fit for the majority of teams. But I think he still fits as a starter for some. Like OKC and play Russ as the "2" (in name only)

Rondo does what a point guard should do and yalls offensive efficiency plummeted. So what kind of PG fits for the Mavs then?

that's actually exactly what the rockets need from the PG position.

problem is that beverley is actually a very average 3pt shooter and compared to the last two seasons, his defense has not been particularly good this year either.

i wouldn't mind him returning to houston as a backup, but if somebody wants to overpay and give him the starter's job, then good luck to him and them.

Except that for the Mavs this year, he wasn't. I think the ability is still there (averaged 7.5 rebounds, 10.8 assists in his 22 games with Boston this year). His problem in Dallas was between his ears. He was either unwilling or unable to play in Carlisle's system. Square peg. Round hole.

Now, he also had deficiencies: bad decisions, bad FT shooting, bad jump shooting, knuckleheadedness.

J Kidd ended up being exactly what they needed in the championship run. He was old and slow, but still had great vision, could hit open 3's.

I thought this was the obvious answer.

Cuban will have cycled through half of the top 10 or so of the top 10 point guards (Circa 2009).

Jameer Nelson - Check
Chauncey Billups - Could still try to get him
Jason Kidd - Check
Jose Calderon - Check
Tony Parker - Nope (has not had him)
Rajon Rondo - Check
Steve Nash - Check
Derrick Rose - Could still try. Why not build around the solid knees of Rose and Amare?
Deron Williams - Wanted.
Chris Paul - Nope

As much as I support the "get Dirk another ring at any cost" mentality, that simply won't happen by just trading for veteran players, especially at PG. Veteran PGs have a hard time adapting to Carlisle's coaching strategy because they feel they've earned the right to call all the shots.

Its time the Mavs look for a PG that is young, established, and has room to grow under Carlisle. From the guys listed on the link, Brandon Knight has those attributes, but will be expensive and tends to be a quick-scoring PG, while Carlisle calls a slow, deliberate, and calculated game. I know he's less proven, but Reggie Jackson could be a great fit in Dallas. He would be my #1 target on a budget.

I think the Rockets need someone who can create since Ariza is more 3 and D. I think he'd fit well on OKC, purely from a skill set standpoint. He'd take Robertson's spot.
