My buddies and I thought of this as we were watching the NCAA tournament. We didn't think through all the details, so I thought I'd ask you guys. What if, in the month of either December or January, There was a full 30 team tournament that counted towards the records? What would that look like?

It wouldnt be like this one though. This one would have all 30 teams.

Because all the teams already play each other, and having a "tournament" serves no real purpose other than causing a headache for fans who want to purchase tickets to regular season games.

Be as the NBA is always looking for ways to make their product more entertaining

they just signed a 2+ billion dollar tv revenue deal. they aren't looking for changes nearly as bad as you think they are.

Would it be as big as the Flint, Michigan Mega Bowl?

I can see Pop throwing out the scrubs and taking a vacation/mini camp for the team instead of playing in a tournament.

I'd say it makes sense to about 3 billion guys.

I've heard Adam Silver actually talk about the NBA doing something similar, but a little different than what you proposed. No it would not count toward the regular season record.

They are looking at the FA Cup in England for soccer as a model where every team is included in this single knockout tournament where the rounds are just played throughout the year.

That said, I don't think it'll ever happen because I can't imagine many teams putting in any of their good players when they are already holding them out for regular season games.

Probably would never get off the ground, but the idea is not as far-fetched as some seem think.

Maybe not, but Sliver is a really smart guy. If a smart guy thinks it's something worth looking into, I trust home more than you and I. I don't understand why yall are being such jerks about this.

The players union would require a lot to convince them to play a tournament like this.

It's a stupid idea because it doesn't add anything to the current product. What the hell kind of incentive would you offer to make good teams give a damn about winning a mid season tournament? If it's purely for entertainment purposes, the NBA would throw a fit after Pop calls up his entire d league roster to compete in a pointless tournament.

Look the point I'm trying to make right now is you have the right to disagree, but don't act like its the worst idea ever if it's actually being considered as a possibility.

If someone of any importance suggested redrafting every team in the league for the sake of parity, Adam Silver would tell them they will look into it. He's a diplomat. He's smart enough to not say no at the drop of a hat.

A tournament is a stupid idea. It provides no value to anyone other than the cable companies, and it would be a logistical pain in the ass.

You can't call it mob mentality when you've managed to unite different fan bases against your stupid idea.

There are plenty of worse ideas than this. Doesn't change the fact that this is a terrible idea.

I could envision a single elimination tournament two weeks prior to the All Star Game (does not interfere with holiday games). The teams with the best record receive a bye from the first round and the tournament winner receives an automatic 3 seed in the NBA Playoffs (they can still obtain a #1 or #2 seed). You could probably play the game on the Friday of All Star Weekend


....the issue is the NBA All Star game is typically the 2nd weekend of February. The NFL season will be over (which is the one time when the NBA "controls" professional sports). I cannot see a tournament occurring that limits the amount of games on television and increases the risk of injury. The NBA is not going to run this in November (season just started) or December (lose too much in holiday ticket sales). January is an option with NFL Playoffs going on, but will the NBA want to compete with the NFL for weekend viewers?
