If youre a Bulls fan, how deflating is this?? He's a max player that's gonna be out for an extended amount of time and who's to say he's ever going to go more than a 1/3 of a season totally healthy.

They're screwed

Penny, Yao, Grant Hil. All of them were supposed to be great, Rose was just that kind of player. At least he got a chance to play in the league and won an MVP.

I know some fans are going to blame Thibs, but it felt like it was coming. He tried to coast the season heading into the playoffs, and he still got an injury without being touched.

One could say early in his career he didn't have much help and had to do it all himself, which put his body in risk. He sacrificed his body every time he drove the lane and got banged up a ton.

Then they surrounded him with some help, but the damage was already done. He rushed through rehab to get back, but in the end, he's fragile and failed to remain unharmed even while coasting.

No kidding. Two of the best players to ever come out of the Univ. of Memphis and neither of them could stay healthy at the next level.

After looking at it, the Rose/Oden comparison holds water. If you cut Rose's career in half, they are extremely similar statistically.

Their bank accounts are not however.

Derrick Rose has missed 103 games in the past 2 seasons.
Duncan has missing 97 games in 18 seasons.

His knee stuff is a concern, but if anyone of us got elbowed in the face by an NBA player, we'd be in a coma. Let's be real.

Karl Malone is the amazing one. He only missed a total of 10 games in his first 17 seasons.

It will be real interesting to see what happens to him in free agency in a couple seasons.

Does the NBA's CBA allow for contracts to be based on health/availability?

I'm not so sure his injuries had anything to do with the workload.

If you look at how he drives to the hoop, he almost always did a jump stop and then either dunk or get fouled. That's very hard on your knees because you're coming to a complete stop on the hard wood floor and absorbing all that energy in your knees. You do this over and over and naturally your knees are going to deteriorate over time. If he only learned to jump off of one leg, that might have helped prolong his career.

Or, since Duncan had already been referenced, do like him and just don't jump period.

No

They allow for incentives (likely/unlikely based on the previous season).

I think those are more performance based, and not availability.

CBA
