Yahoo is reporting that Leonard is looking for a max contract and that talks have stalled. I do not blame him, coming off of the finals that he had. The Spurs need to pay the man. Now's the time, especially with the increase in cap that's about to happen. Hopefully they concede by Friday.

A lot of different aspects involved here. It's obvious he was going to want/get a max deal but the Spurs need to see if it is more beneficial to do it now or next off-season. Without getting too much into the salary figures, if Duncan and Manu retire next off-season the Spurs could essential go out and sign a high potential recruit to pair with Leonard by signing the FA first and then retaining Leonard last via his bird rights (the rockets tried this same strategy this off-season) If the Spurs go ahead and max out Leonard now, they won't have as much to spend on other FA's with Duncan and Manu's $.

Also, one thing people are missing regarding the max contract and the cap increase in the NBA in a couple years is it really wouldn't be saving that much by giving the Leonard the max right now. Kawhi signing a max contract isn't 25% of the 2014 cap, its 25% of the 2015 cap so if the cap does have a huge jump in it this off-season like expected than he would be looking at more like 21M/yr instead of the 18M max that's currently being reported off the current NBA salary cap figures.

Now if the cap jumps again in 2016 than the max contract would increase even more but the 18M/yr is not accurate based on future cap projections. All in all there is some incentive financially to do the deal now but I could see the strategy in wanting to wait until next season to do it, especially if it allows you to attract another FA to pair with Kawhi. And while Kawhi's value is likely not going to go down, it's not going to get any higher.

Of course on the negative side, you don't want to run the risk of upsetting him which could result in him signing an offer sheet similar to Parsons this year (3 yr deal with PO) which would suck for the Spurs.

So it's a little bit of a tricky situation. I would agree with go ahead and pay him though just so its one less thing to worry about.

The Spurs are gambling a little bit but with their track record of history and success regarding contracts and not overpaying I would be hesitant to question their strategy.

This is one of the horrible side-effects of that ridiculous Parson's contract. If I'm Kwahi, I'm definitely looking to max out. That being said, he's got several HOF mentors in the locker room who have rarely demanded their maximum market value. I think Duncan received a max deal in his first FA year and probably one more time after that. The difference is Duncan was already a league MVP. Leonard isn't close to that level and it's still not 100% certain that he will ever be. That being said, he's a relatively low risk investment at this point and you know he'll get a max deal someone on the open market.

Kawhi has every reason to try and get a max deal, but I'm sure he understands the culture in SA by now. Stars are usually underpaid their true value, but the tradeoff is you play for the best organization in the game. (Best coach, best front office, and always a contender.)

Hopefully he agrees to a little less money instead of jumping ship for for a few more mill.

Spurs have announced that Kawhi Leonard (eye infection) & Tiago Splitter (strained calf) are out tomorrow vs the Mavs. Of course Patty is out as well.

Going to be tough to get the W without those guys that's for sure. Oh well, it will be a great night regardless of the outcome of the game.

The champions revealed videos are fantastic. I'm going to go a little over the top here, but since this core has been in San Antonio for such a long time, watching these videos feels like it transcends sports. Professional athletes often carry a mercenary moniker because they so often go to the highest bidder, but with Tim, Tony, and Manu, it's just so different. Their success is our success. You root for them individually and as part of the team. Timmy was drafted when I was 9 years old. While I remember life before Timmy, basketball really didn't start mattering until he was around. Watching him sit around talking with Pop, Tony, and Manu was really impactful to me, because damn, they've played a fairly big part in my life. Especially with Timmy, he never really shed the childhood idol image for me.

I'm really glad they put this series together and I love that it is just the four of them sitting around reflecting on their time together.

Here's to hoping they can win it all one more time, but regardless of what happens, because of this past year, I feel like they're going out on top.

Agree wholeheartedly, john. I love those guys, and it would not feel the same to watch the Spurs win a championship without them. I'm rooting for them as individuals as much as I'm rooting for the team. Was really happy Timmy was able to get his fifth ring, and I hope he can retire a champion.
