At this point, I hope Houston gets the 5 seed and we can (hopefully) get revenge on Portland. I feel like a series vs the Clips wouldn't be the end of the world, but we don't match up well vs San Antonio at all now that Bev and DMo are out, so I want to avoid y'all like the plague

But it'd be so much fun....

I want the Clippers in the 5 seed and the Grizzles/Rockets in the 3/6.

I can't decide. The bottom half of the bracket is going to be brutal no matter who ends up where. Especially if Tony isn't right.

http://espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/powerrankings

Hollinger's power rankings. Historically, these have been pretty solid as to how teams are playing going into the playoffs. Especially look at win margin and margin last 25% of the season.

Last 25% of the season margin leaders are:

1. Spurs 13.9
2. Warriors 10.6
3. Cavs 7.8
4. Clippers 7.4
5. Hawks 4.8

That's a huge drop off between 1 and 5. What it means is the Spurs and Warriors are playing far, far above everyone else right now.

The Rockets are just at +1.45 for 11th in the league. Memphis is just under that at 1.43.

You also want to look at margin over the course of the season. Unsurprisingly, the Warriors top the league at 10.21. The Clippers are next at 6.53 and the Spurs are third at 6.21. The Grizzlies and Rockets are both just a hair above 3.

So I want to avoid the Warriors and Clippers as long as possible and want to play the Mavs in rd 1 and (2.85 on the season, -4.20 margin in the last 25% of the season.)

is there a playoff scenario tool somewhere? what happens if we all win out?

1. Golden State
2. Memphis
3. San Antonio
4. Portland
5. Houston
6. Los Angeles
7. Dallas
8. New Orleans
If the Spurs, Clips, Grizz, and Rockets win out... The Spurs are 2. Would the Clips really slide to 6?? Doesn't seem right.
You're right, my scenario has Houston losing one.
I think Houston wins out unless tonight's game really wore them out. They have to fly to North Carolina to play the Hornets tomorrow night.

But still, the Hornets and Jazz both suck. They shouldn't lose either one.
Don't sleep on the Jazz, they're 24-17 in their last 41.

There is a typo on that sign. Playoffs start on April 18

So if the rockets and spurs both win out we are the 2 seed regardless of what the Clips and Griz do? Is that correct?

I think that is the only realistic way we get the 2 seed, as I don't see the Clips or the Griz both dropping a game.

Rockets are at Charlotte tonight and finish up at home vs the Jazz, so those are very winnable games.

Then the Spurs just have to do their part against the Pelicans in NOLA on Wednesday. Who might be very motivated or not at all depending on if their playoff spot is on the line.

Yes, if rockets win out we're 2. But if grizz lose we're 2 as well regardless of what LA does, as division winners own the tiebreaker.

Assuming we beat Nola of course. Hopefully Okc lose to Portland so they're playing for nothing against us.

Thanks for the info. Wouldn't the Clips get HCA against us in your Griz loss scenario, so really it would be like having the 3 seed if the first round goes chalk? Just like we will get HCA if we are a 5 seed over the blazers, so really they are a 4 in name only.

So really we need the rockets to win out, as the odds of both the Griz and the Clips dropping another is pretty slim.
Brian Earl Spilner

I don't believe so, if we have the higher seed and the same record I believe we get HCA. I don't think they use any additional tiebreakers to determine HCA, it only matters if the lower seed has a worse record.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.

If I understand correctly, if we have a tie with the Clippers, we get the higher seed AND HCA. If they finish above us to get #2, then we would be the #3, assuming Memphis and Houston finish below us. There is no "in name only" in that scenario, since the Spurs would already be in the top 4.

Basically, Memphis loses 1, we win out, the worst we can be is #2, correct?

A Warriors win tonight makes things simple. Beat NOLA and we are the 2 seed if that happens.

If the Grizz do indeed lose, It's better for the Rockets to go ahead and lose as well. That will result in the Spurs clinching no less than the 3 seed regardless of what happens in NOLA.

Pretty simple though. Go dubs.

That's what I'm leaning at the moment. I think the Clips can give the Warriors a serious run in the second round. Those two teams really dislike each other also so that would make for a very entertaining series.

Interesting note: none of the Spurs, Clippers, Grizzlies, or Rockets control their own destiny at the moment as far as getting to #2.

Still hard to believe that we can all but lock up the #2 seed tonight if Memphis loses. We were 7-8 for what, 98% of the season? Crazy.

That is so crazy. What a season.

And it's not like this is the East with a bunch of garbage. All four of these West teams are legit contenders to win the West.

The West 6 seed will be 28 or 30 games over .500. The East 6 seed will be about break even?

Yeah it definitely benefits the Warriors to take out the short handed Grizz. Matches SA and LAC up in round 2 which are the two teams I'd want to avoid if I were a Warriors supporter.

Spurs finish the season at #2 on the final NBA power rankings.

Considering where we were before the All-Star break, pretty damn good place to finish.

Let's hope he's ready to go by the first game of playoffs.

I have to imagine that there was no way Tiago was going to play until Game 1 of the playoffs, no matter the severity.

Hopefully it's all precaution.

I really hope they're just being overly cautious. The way Baynes has been playing we may not need Tiago to win our first round games, but I'd rather not take the chance.

If we match up against Dallas, I don't think Tiago is all that important. Tiago would be more important against New Orleans than Dallas.

Pop said before the Phoenix game that if it were a playoff game Tiago would be playing. Don't think there's any doubt he will play when the playoffs start. Just hope it isn't seriously bothering or limiting him. Going to need him defensively especially.

Timmy D named Western Conference Player of the Week.

quote:
The NBA today announced that San Antonio Spursforward Tim Duncan was named the Western Conference Player of the Week for
games played Monday, April 6, through Sunday, April 12. Boston's Isiah Thomas
was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week. This is Duncan's 23rd time earning Player ofthe Week honors, which is tied for fourth all-time (Karl Malone and Allen
Iverson) since the award was established prior to the 1979-80 season. He
becomes the second-oldest player in NBA history to receive the award behind
Reggie Miller who was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week on April 3,
2005 at the age of 39.

Duncan averaged 17.3 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.25 blocks, 2.5 assists and 1.50
blocks while shooting .650 (26-40) from the field as the Spurs went 4-0 for the
week, extending their win streak to 11games. He tallied 29 points on 12-of-15 shooting and added 10 rebounds and
three rejections on April 10, including a block on Houston Rockets guard James
Harden with 2.9 seconds remaining that sealed a 104-103 victory for San
Antonio. Duncan followed that up with 22 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists,
2 steals and 2 blocks in 25:51 minutes in a 107-91 win vs. Phoenix on April 12. For the year, Duncan is averaging 13.9 points, ateam-best 9.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.97 blocks in 28.9 minutes per game
while shooting .510 (413-810) from the field and .739 (227-307) from the foul
line. He currently ranks fifth in the NBA in blocks and 15th in
rebounding. Duncan has totaled 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 steals
for a 17th season, the most by any player in the NBA since 1973.

Hope Duncan gets DPOY this year. It's still kind of ridiculous that he has never won it.

3rd in Defensive Box +/-.
4th in Def Win Shares (above Anthony Davis, who I think wins DPOY this year.)
3rd in DRating
5th in Blocks per game
His clutch defensive rating is 87.9 (last 5 minutes of the game, 5 point game)
His Blocks and Steals per 100 possessions are each better than or equal to his first five seasons in the NBA.
His Opponent FG% at the rim is just 46.4%. Tyson Chandler is 50.8%. DeAndre Jordan is 48.6%. Omer Asik is 50.7%. Cousins is 57.0. Anthony Davis is 48.5%. Marc Gasol is 49.3%.
