There are only a handful of teams that can absorb the contracts and a lot of them wouldn't want to (like the Lakers or Phoenix.)

Maybe he does have a backup plan, but the other teams also have a lot of power now. Morey has to make it happen quickly.

What's to keep Philly from saying, "We will take Lin, but you have to give us Beverley and Jones to do it or no deal?"

Does Morey say no?

What if another team is doing the same thing and wants Bev and TJ to take Asik?

Rock and hard place with a 48 hour time limit.

Every team in the league now knows that Houston is desperate to get rid of Asik and Lin. I'm guessing the price to agree to acquire either of them just drastically went up.

Morey and philly's GM are tight, he used to work for morey. Also philly is under the salary flour and has to spend. Lin helps them there and he help bc he only has one year left. I do think the trade will end up being Lin and the pick they are getting from NO.

The deals that were in place will be the same ones that get done.

Barry, if all that is true, why is Morey trying to dump Lin on LA right now.
Diet Cokehead
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Barry is clueless about all this stuff. He just jumps into this today and clearly doesn't have any idea what he's talking about.

Mavericks Moving on Past Chandler Parsons

Fully expecting Houston to match on Chandler Parsons, Dallas moving ahead with Plan B:P Luol Deng or Trevor Ariza, league sources say.

This was the potential backfire and risk of Cuban's move. I don't know when the 72-hour clock started ticking on Parsons offer sheet, but it expires Sunday 12:01 AM at the earliest. Mavs had better hope Ariza or Deng don't sign something before then, because all their cap space is tied up with the parsons offer sheet so they can only extend verbal offers, not actual contracts. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

The clock on Parsons expires Sunday at 11 am, I believe.

The Mavs can certainly meet with Deng and Ariza and talk to them before the clock runs out.

"Salaam Mak, Luol! So we can sign you at noon Sunday. Would you take X for 4 years? Yes? Cool, done deal."

Of course, absolutely. It only becomes an issue if a team the free agent is also interested in beats dallas to the punch and puts an actual writeen contract with written dollar signs and terms that can be signed say tonight or tomorrow morning.

It depends on the player. Some guys may not want want to take the risk of well, what if bosh changes his mind and gets max money from miami, then houston declines to mathc, then my verbal offer from Cuban is up in smoke. That's where your cap space being tied up on a RFA can be costly.

Or Dallas gives him the written contract with the understanding that they can't turn it in for a day.

Not sure that actually helps, that actually could make it worse. If dallas extends a written offer with the assumption of cap space, then for some bizarre reason houston declines to match, then dallas is in the incredibly awkward situation of having to say, "um excuse me, that contract we gave you yesterday, um yeah, if you sign that, the league is going to tear it up saying it's an illegal transaction under the salary cap. So just go ahead and toss it in the shredder. Sorry man, good luck."

That would seem to be a very bad way to do business. I would think Cuban would be better and smarter than that, and just extend a verbal offer while explaining the situation to the free agent.

Who do Mavs fans prefer? Deng or Ariza? Because one of them is coming to Dallas.

Deng

And I think Cuban will keep the offer sheet from being a hindrance (not that they won't sign elsewhere anyway, but I don't think the offer sheet will play a role). The offer sheet was a long shot and looks more like Cuban just driving up the price.

I haven't followed either of the two close enough, but I keep hearing that Ariza is a play for contract type guy. If that is the case, it would make me want to lower his offer.

If the situation has to be explained, I think it is time for the player to find a new agent. Anyone that pays even passing attention to the mayhem knows exactly what the situation is.

Give me Deng. Sounds like Phoenix is hot after him, though.

I bet there are some GMs salivating over the possibility of a Jimmy Johnson/Herschel Walker lopsided type trade.

With Dallas $ tied up with Parsons offer sheet, Wizards are trying to get Ariza deal done. Ariza still wants to hear from Mavs, though.

Sounds good. This fun will last into next week.

Yeah, I think the Bosh signing makes it more likely that Parsons goes to the Mavs. Morey wants that cap room.

Lol about Ariza. Smart kid. He wants the 15 mil offered to Parsons. He won't get that much though. Maybe a 4 year deal for 48.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ariza is a contract year player. Give him a deal where every year is a team option.

Remember when he got that huge deal from Houston then shot below 40% for the season. Yeah.
AgBeliever
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think Ariza is plan D. Deng plan C and Parsons obviously plan B after missing on Melo.

Depends on what the rockets do between now and Sunday morning. If they land a free agent at PF or PG that they think gives them a championship-contending big 3, then they match parsons. If they don't, then I think they let parsons walk and go after the ariza/deng/Stephenson/gasols of the world

Yeah Morey definitely does not want to match the offer unless he feels he has to. And I don't think he feels that way now.

Good point on Stephenson. The Mavs could take a look at him if the money is right. It won't be a 5 year offer though. I think the order of FAs they are looking at are: Parsons, Deng, Ariza and then Stephenson. And then Marion if those all fall through.

Houston, as you said, is looking at the same group along with Gasol.

So what's the general mavs fan consensus? I for one hope we land Parsons.

It by no means makes them west favorites, but I think we would at least have a shot if we rest dirk and stay healthy.
