We would likely have been West champs (50/50) had he kept the crew together this year (Chandler actually got better this year). Now we are likely to miss out on both big fish (Deron and Dwight) and will be looking at the 7th or 8th from now until Dirk leaves or retires.

Last years mavs wouldn't have had a chance against this years thunder. Don't kid yourself.

Someone bump any Mavs thread from 2006-2010 and compare to this thread.

Mavs lost to the Thunder by a total of like 10 points in 3 of their losses. Chandler, JJB, and DeShawn would have been game changers (The Heat still would have got them though... and probably the Spurs, but still).

still have a signed Spurs ball from childhood w/ Johnny Moore, Mark Ohlberding, Ice Man, Larry Kenon and others' signatures on it. i like to put pins in it whenever the Spurs are playing.

if Cuban had been able to keep together last years team as a whole, they would have definitely had a shot at beating anyone in these playoffs. but, that is neither here nor there bc he didn't.

im as diehard a mavs fan as they come, but you are insane if you think keeping the squad together would have helped.

this OKC team is studly. at some point, every team in the nba rebuilds or reloads. time for the mavs to do the same. look at the spurs, they thought they could make one more run to the finals with the same squad and came close, but OKC is just that much better.

our only shot to get back to the top is with a top tier pg aka deron. if not deron, we need to rebuild.

oh and the poster that says last year's mavs would have lost to this year's thunder. last year's mavs were on a run like no other. this year's thunder would be close vs 2011 mavs, but ill take the experience and chemistry and the legendary run of dirk last year vs the 2012 thunder.

the question now will be, if the Thunder win the title this season, how long before their studs want to be traded to large-market teams for the bright lights?

No... the Mavs definitely would've had a solid chance to win the West again. The only difference between this year's Thunder and last is an old geezer in Fisher (yes, he contributes) but I think the Mavs could have taken them down.

I don't know how you'd want to move away from that atmosphere. Their fans are insane and actually will them to victory. It's impressive for an NBA crowd. Replace that with the big city newspapers and fans constantly trashing you and your team? I think this group will see the potential to do what the Spurs did this past decade and put together a dynasty of multiple championships in a small maker key with a fervent fanbase.

It all starts and ends with Kevin Durant, and I don't think he's going anywhere.

What about Captain Clutch Acie Law?

You are gonna need a lot more than Deron and Dirk to win a title. You'd have to get Hibbert too. Mavs can't win without a solid big man.

Mark Cuban was being called an idiot for the team he assembled last year. Look what happened.

The only idiotic moves he's made have been overpaying Dampier and Haywood.

Eschmeyer, Marquis (6 years $36 million), Shawn Bradley (4 years $44 million ?), Rigadeau, Finley (7 years $102 million), um I bet there's plenty of more.

We definitely would have been a better team, but there is no saying that we repeat. It would also theoretically screw us in the future. They haven't been wrong about this before, so I have to think they know they can get d-will. Who else we get will be interesting to see.

Cuban has been stupid about many things, but I think he made the right call. The 2011 squad would have certainly performed better, but I think its doubtful if they could have taken the Thunder or Spurs.

Plus, it would have meant loading up on contracts and really binding your future off-season moves. Cuban obviously decided he needed to start planning for post-Dirk and the next 10 years.

If you do want to call Cuban an idiot for something, let it be his comment about how this year's team would be even better than last year's.
