Morey was handed 2x injury prone players on long term contracts making max salaries. The team he inherited was devoid of young talent and littered with poisen contracts. Consider that when the Rockets played the Mavs in 2005 (right year?) in the playoffs, Juwan Howard was a starter and Ryan Bowen was getting significant minutes. Rafer Alston was the starting point and there was no credible backup. In a word, we were terrible.
He raped San Antonio by getting Luis Scola for VSpan.
He drafted Aaron Brooks in the late first round and Carl Landry in the second, which were both undeniably huge hits.
He traded Rafer Alston for Kyle Lowry which has been an undeniable upgrade.
He drafted Chase Budinger in the 2nd round
He was able to get Kevin Martin, Jordan Hill and draft picks/considerations from the Knicks for Carl Landry (a second round pick).
Two seasons ago, the team he constructed was able to get over the 1st round hump without Tracy McGrady and his $20M cap space on the court.
Last season, he was able to make teh Rockets have a winning record with $40M on the bench the entire season.
There's a reason he's considered one of the best in the business. He hasn't been able to attract a super star to bring us to a championship level team, but then again super stars aren't just growing on trees.
-LeBron, Bosh, and Wade wanted to play together in South Beach and nobody was going to stop that marriage
-Chris Paul is unavailable because the Hornets are being sold, so he's vital to the value of the franchise
-Amare had his heart set on joining forces with a super star in New York
-Carmelo is in the same boat
-Deron Williams, Derrick Rose, Russel Westbrook, Kevin Durant, Brandon Roy, etc. are young superstars with plenty of years on their contracts and aren't going anywhere.
These free agent super stars are just acting like 19 year old kids and join the cool frat in the cool party town, where they don't have as much pressure to lead a team.
If the Rockets fired Daryl Morey, there would probably be a long line of teams that would loveto have him as their GM. He manages the salary cap well, his draft record is outstanding, he puts together a deep roster full of contributors, etc. Cleveland didn't do anything special to land Lebron, they just sucked really bad in a good year. The Spurs didn't do anything special to land Tim Duncan, they just sucked in the right year. The Hornets didn't do anything special to land Chris Paul, they just sucked at the right year. And so on. When the Rockets sucked enough to get the #1 pick, Yao was the best guy available. Had it been a year later, that could have been LeBron James. Had it been a year earlier, it could have been Kwame Brown.
