No different than Jordan wearing Jordan brand clothes or Tiger wearing a TW hat. Arrogant? Yes, obviously, but 99% of people who are successful at that level are. Extreme arrogance is often a critical ingredient in someone becoming great at something.

There's a difference between wearing a product you represent and wearing a shirt with your face on it. You're being purposefully dense if you deny it.

That's not Disneyland, it is jut one of Kobe's houses. He just hired Goofy to come hang out for the day.

If he wanted Goofy to come over, couldn't have he just saved the money and invited Luke Walton over for a BBQ if that's his house?

I'll disagree with this every time somebody says it. There are WAY too many examples of people who are NOT extremely arrogant but are at or near the top of their sport.

IMO you are putting the cart before the horse. Arrogance can develop when you've been told all your life how great you are. But if you are grounded with a good foundation and a good upbringing, you can be the best at something but still be a good sport.

I said it's "often" an ingredient. Of course there are exceptions. But more often than not, what I said is true.

+1.

I like your examples, and I'd also add the best athlete of any sport in the last decade, and the greatest player ever in his respective sport, Roger Federer.

Just look at how he answered his post-match questions after he was taken to 5 sets by some no name in his 1st round wimbledon match this week. He was given every opportunity to come up with reasons for why he struggled and was on the brink of an unthinkable loss, but he did nothing but give his opponent credit.

The man is pure humble, pure class, and a great ambassador for tennis. He also has the drive of a champion, and is very competitive on the court.

obviously the point is that its not an ingredient, but a by product in those not mature enough to handle greatness
association=/=causation

how in the world does arrogance elevate your level of physical ability in any way, how many arrogant young athletes have made it to the bigs only to be crushed and embarrassed by the level of competition

You have a to have a level of arrogance to believe you are great, and you can't become great without believing that you are great. People rarely stumble into greatness. They get there, in part, because they believe they are great. In other, words, they have some level of arrogance that drives them.

That doesn't mean you wear a t-shirt with your face on it. That's classic narcissism.

You are missing a step somewhere.
Knowing/believing you are great /= arrogance. Confidence/greatness are a personality trait that is more or less innate. Arrogance is an attitude that is borne of poor environment and nurtured by ego.

Take a look at great athletes that are considered classy and unassuming, and those that are considered arrogant. Invariably in group (A) you will see a stable home life, and a good foundation. In group (B) you will see instability and a poor foundation. There are exceptions both ways but by and large arrogance comes from upbringing, not "greatness".

Just my opinion.

Also, I agree with the poster that said his wife is chubby.

You'd think that for the wife of an NBA player, fitness would be a priority. What is it she has to take care of all day long that she can't hit the gym for an hour or two per day?
EliteZags
How long do you want to ignore this user?
again that's association not causation, I'd like to see how your arrogance helps you in the ring with a street fighter

its not an ingredient, you don't need arrogance to have determination and work ethic, you don't need arrogance to have freak genetics

its like me saying "all nba players drive nice cars, therefore driving nice cars makes you better at basketball"

to spell it out, they're arrogant because they're great, they're not great because they're arrogant
watty
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I would disagree, on some level. I think part of the reason they become great is often because they are just arrogant enough to do so.
MassAggie97
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Agree to disagree. If arrogance were "an ingredient" necessary to be competitive at the top level, Peyton Manning wouldn't be well on his way to becoming the greatest QB of all time. Tim Duncan wouldn't be the greatest PF of all time. Cal Ripken wouldn't be one of the greatest SS's of all time. The list goes on and on. I think you are correct that it takes supreme confidence in oneself, but we disagree on the fact that supreme confidence necessarily breeds arrogance.

quote:
to spell it out, they're arrogant because they're great, they're not great because they're arrogant

That puts it about as concisely as it can be put.

I find it hard to believe Kobe would some how not be as great of a player if he was more humble, or Chris Paul would be a better point guard is he was more selfish and acted like a constant drama queen/crybaby in New Orleans

Ummm. No, she isn't. She's extremely attractive. That white dress doesn't really do her justice. But even with that on, it's easy to tell that she has a nice figure.

I completely agree.

That doesnt really have anything to do with how you present yourself to the media.

Most elite athletes ive ever been around in order to be great had to have an insane amount of confidence in themselves and their ability.

Just because some of these athletes you all have mentioned have mastered the art of appearing humble before the media....does not mean they are not arrogant.
