On that SEC Network preview last week they talked a lot about Arkansas and their keeper Keegan Smith who got pulled after 78 minutes after giving up 4 goals.

Did anyone else watch the end of the Vandy game? I turned it on after our game was over.

That PK call was the wildest thing I've ever seen. The ref makes the call, goes to VAR, then calls it a PK. Then the 4th ref decides to intervene. He shows the ref a piece of paper and points to some words on that paper. Then he (4th ref) heads over to have a conversation with the SMU coach. One of the SMU coaches is holding a computer with the screen facing the 4th ref. Who knows what he showed him. But the 4th ref then goes to the center says a few words and so back to VAR. 4th ref is pointing to the screen, slow mo back and forth. Forever. After the final confirmation of the PK, the 4th ref is standing by the SMU bench talking to the coach. It was, in my opinion, the most wild interaction I've ever seen.

The issue was where did the foul happen, as the Vandy player was entering the box. Her foot was on the line, the defender was in the box. Yes, it's important to get the call right, but that 4th official interfered and did so very publicly on camera. Crazy.

In last season's final RPI, the top 4 teams were ACC and 5 of the top 6 were ACC.

After that I'd say Big 12. Then a toss up between the SEC and Big 10.

With the addition of Stanford and Cal to the ACC it is not even close. The ACC is far ahead of everyone else. ACC has won 7 of last 9 national championships, with the other two going to UCLA and Santa Clara, which beat UNC and Florida state for the titles. ACC almost had 9 of 9.

The style of play in the ACC is far superior to the SEC. Will be interesting to see what Bobby is able to do for A&M, but overall the SEC as a whole has been teams that depend on more physical play and often rely on long balls to get the offense started. The ACC is much more of a high possesion/ball control league and the BIG 12 top teams are pretty much high posseion, technical ball control offenses.

Will be interesting to see if Bobby can bring in the players in the midfield to successfully play the high possion style of play.

There's another issue here, the referee did not call a foul on the field to review. To my understanding, the referee can initiate a review to determine if the foul occured inside or outside the penalty area. That was the case last year and, granted, I have yet to take my rules test for this season yet. I don't know the rules changes at all, and not even close for Video Review. But, my understanding is that you can't review whether a foul actually occured or not if you haven't called it on the field. NCAA VR is not for re-refereeing the game. I'm sure we'll get a memo on this one next week. Maybe I'll remember to let you all know.

2 other things:
1. Vandy has a player from Allen, TX that A&M didn't even recruit. She's a beast. FC Dallas ECNL player, dad's a coach and former NT player and plays for the the Grenada NT herself. Another TX player G missed by not even trying.

2. Baylor smashed Arky 4-1. Eric Bell (TCU) and Michele Lenard (Baylor) were on my short list in the New coach thread we had and I know she interviewed. Happy with Shuttlesworth, but it'll be interesting to go back and look at the coaching search in a few years.

Completely agree on Stanford, but Cal hasn't really added much for the ACC's strength. I think they have won maybe just one NCAA tourney game in the last dozen years. Have been surprised McGuire has kept his job based on his record and the abuse allegations that came out a couple of years ago. ACC is certainly the top women's soccer conference by a very wide margin right now.

True Cal is not near the level of Stanford, UNC, Duke, Florida State etc, They are not going to win a National Championship , but they did finish last year with an RPI of 45. They are a solid addition to a conference. They were 8-3-8 overall and 4-2-4 in the ACC. They tied Florida State in Tallahassee last year which was a shock, but still did it.

What is going on at Arkansas? Blown out at home in the opener against Baylor and they follow that up with a 1-1 tie against Loyola of Maryland (#227 RPI last year).

She started in exactly 0 games for Vandy for the first 3 years there. Played less than a quarter of the total minutes for Vandy last year as a junior. Much less minutes the first two years.

I am not trying to be negative on her (props to her for continuing to work hard and develop), but keep in mind we had the #8 ranked class that year. We were recruiting other elite players (from TX) and we were still under the equivalency scholarship system at the time so we couldn't take everybody.

We had a bunch of problems with our soccer team in G's last few years, but this isn't one of them.
