I'd have been greedy for a second away goal with them playing with 10 men, rather than just being happy going into Monday with a 1 goal lead

That was some kind of ugly soccer.

So much possession. Sooo few scoring chances created with it

Yeah, how do we go 60/40 on possession and 6/12 on shots on goal? That's a weird ass stat line

Well **** me.

I stand corrected.

Tessman and McKenzie had an awful first 30 minutes.
Some decent play by a lot of the team, awful field.
2nd half...just mediocre over all, not great but not bad.
jamaica could have easily ended up with 2 reds

All things considered, it wasn't too bad.

It was precisely the kind of game we wouldn't win under Ggg:

… jet lagged players on a horrific field in a tropical environment.

… half of our outfield starters are out injured (or being allowed to rest/recover).

… and Poch hasn't had time to fully install his system.

It could've been a trainwreck and it wasn't. In fact there were moments where I saw some pleasing things that make me optimistic for the future.

Turner played lights out.

i think we tie or lose that game had he not been given the start.

I thought Turner made a few poor decisions, due to lack of playing time, but overall played well.

we were lucky for Turner to save a PK and very lucky another PK wasn't awarded for Ream's handball in the box and also lucky at least one other time where they put a ball across the face of goal and their runner just barely missed it. we possessed the ball and tried to slow the match down after an early lead, on a pitch that was already really slow. but it was ugly. Other than the early goal from Pulisic to Pepi, there was maybe one single other moment in the match where we had a dangerous chance to score with Pulisic to Vazquez.

We had more than that. If the pitch wasn't terrible then Jedi gets the ball in stride and likely buries a goal and we're up 2-0 in the 7th minute. Slow ball allowed the keeper to rush out.

I saw some good ideas in the final third. We were trying to play with a tempo and directness we didn't see under Ggg… but the pitch really gave Jamaica the ability to get back into position. And it seems like we lost a ton of balls in the middle/back of the field. None of our guys could pass well on that surface.

But you're not wrong that we were lucky to win. I had amnesia earlier this morning and forgot about the Ream non-PK handball. And their 9 was absolutely abusing our CBs. They couldn't pick out and win a long ball to save their lives.

But Pat is also right that Jamaica should've had a couple dudes sent off, so they were also lucky. In fact, I wonder if the non-PK was a bit of a make-up call. I felt like a draw would've been a fair result and I would've taken it, especially in light of the circumstances I listed previously.

I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll see a much better performance in the 2nd leg.

plus the save on the corner that was curling into the right upper 90. intentional or not, the placement of that kick was incredible.

Don't forget Puli playing Robinson through early on as well. That chance and the Vazquez chance were both 1v1s with the GK that needed to be finished.

if there was any extended discussion or analysis of the non-call on Ream's handball, i missed it.. but it looked to me that his arm was down in a "natural position" and the ball hit him on the outside of the shoulder / upper arm. he did appear to sort of 'throw' the left side of his upper body towards the ball, but with his arm down, i believe it was a good non-call.

did y'all see it differently?

That's what I saw and spent 20 minutes looking for the video. Referee saw it and said it was shoulder. I don't think VAR would overrule that.

He threw a chicken wing at the ball. But every angle they showed had an obstructed view or partially obstructed view of where it hit. It definitely wasn't the top of the shoulder like the R mimed. My gut tells me it was right on the edge of handling. It wasn't getting overturned either way IMHO.

In the live replays, I thought his arm was going up and it hit closer to his elbow than shoulder, but since it went our way I spent zero time reviewing it later.

Just extremely lucky on the Ream handle.

VAR wasn't going to overturn an "obvious error" either way.

If ref had seen it as unnatural position and arm/ not shoulder, and it's very debatable, PK and it wouldn't have been overturned.

ref seeing it as shoulder, also not an obvious error to overturn.

Pulisic's creation of that Robinson chance was great, but I had zero confidence he was going to be able to dribble for 15 yards and finish that chance. He is in very strong in some areas of the game, but thats not one of them.

I actually thought Pulisic played Vasquez out too wide, and Vasquez did a good job to try to find Pulisic cutting to the front post.
Unless there was another 1v1 for Vasquez I just forgot.

I agree in part. I had zero confidence by the time Jedi actually got the ball… but if the crappy field doesn't slow that ball down, he gets it with enough space to either shoot or pass to Musah. The way the ball just dies is crazy… he was supposed to get it sooner and in even more space further downfield. That play would've been brilliant 9 out 10 times on a decent pitch.

i thought Vazquez shot it.. weakly.. left-footed, right to the keeper. Didn't think he was trying to send it back to Pulisic in a give & go.. or did CP stop his run?

We doing a Leg 2 thread or just a continuation of this one?

Weah on the left CP as a 10 through the middle with Musah on the right. Tessman and Wes as the CM's behind. Should come out and comfortably win 3-0
