With the loss today, A&M has had its worst run in program history over the last four years. One game above .500 overall, 5 games below .500 in SEC play. 2 losing records and missed NCAA tourneys. 1 tourney win in four years. Players who are digressing in their careers instead of improving and being developed. Chaotic roster changeover every year, making on field chemistry difficult. Watching talented former players like Hayes and Boeckmann, who were benched at A&M last year, flourish at other top programs. The list goes on and on. And instead of just getting back to basics of the game and developing strategies to win games, Coach G has had mini-rants to the media and thrown players under the bus. Also, a sense of delusion about the state of his program the last several years, still thinking we are a Top 25 program and competitive on the national stage when we are bottom half of the SEC type team during this four-year stretch. There is simply no rational way to argue that this program is not in serious decline. There comes a point when an AD must make a change to prevent a complete collapse from occurring and setting the program back several more years. Sadly, I believe we've reached that point.
I want to make it clear that I believe Coach G has had a very good program and done really nice things at A&M as our only soccer coach since starting the program back in the early 90s. He's had some great players, exciting moments, consistent Top 15-20 type results for almost 3 decades before the decline began in earnest. He's ran a clean program and had great kids that represented A&M well off the field. Most importantly, he's a good man who has been invested in the community for many years and donated his time and effort to great causes. I think for most of us this is not personal, this is about recognizing when it's time for change and a new start.
There is an argument to be made that maybe all those injured players and a few new faces from the transfer portal might turn things around next year, but at this point I think it's a reach. And maybe making a change for change sake doesn't always work out so well. Just look at Florida since they fired their legendary coach Burleigh, they've been a shambles. But you can't allow fear of the unknown to be the impetus for inaction. This is a time to do a serious and very detailed national search for the best fit for the program. There is no rush. The best coaches will be coaching for several more weeks.
I don't know what Trev will do, but his decision here will tell me a lot about what he thinks about the importance of A&M soccer. Do we consider budget constraints with another 2 years on G's contract as more important than preventing the program from continuing to slide into irrelevancy? There are a lot of very good coaches out there that would love to have this job. Everything you need to win a national title is here, especially after stadium and facility upgrades are complete. The fan base is hungry, and a new coach would certainly bring some new hope and excitement into the program. I hope Trev comes to the same conclusion. We'll know in the next few days.
