Final 0-1

Hard to hang your head if you are us. Great effort.

We have to find some forwards who can put the ball in the back of the next for next season.

I believe they are drilled so hard on defense that in any situation their first step is back not forward. Very few are aggressive and have the instincts to play offense. That's the way I see it. I don't know what Arkansas does in practice but we need to be doing the same. G was a goalie so you know where is first thoughts are. They need to get a European assistant coach that lives offense. There was a soccer training group in the Houston area that was nearly all from Scotland, England and Ireland. My son was on a team coached by a Scottish former player that was all about offense. You could barely understand what he was saying because of his accent.

I didn't get the impression in the first game that FSU is a bunch of whiners like they were tonight. Really pleased with the way the team kept playing after Nashville. Didn't think Becerra touched the ball enough tonight and missing Hayes hurt because the way she plays teams have to foul her.

The team played their hearts out. No moral victories here, but they took it to Florida State and it was a heckuva game. Good effort, ladies.

He played Becccerra and Boeckmam together for 20 mins and it was the best we played

Just baffles his refusal all season to play his best combos

It's Coach G. It is who he is and trending the wrong way. B

To Gs credit he scheduled aggressively. He stayed positive and never gave up on the team. Today's match vs the #1 team in the country could have gone either way. No comment on the trend, but this was a season he and the university can be proud of. And the outlook for next year is very positive, particularly if we find a striker.

It was a tough way to end the season, but A&M played about as well as could be expected considering the opponent and the game plan. The A&M defense held strong for most of the match, continually frustrating FSU forwards with our physicality and speed on the edges. And Caldwell finished her career with another solid game, making a few great saves to keep her team in the game in the second half.

FSU's vaunted second half surge happened but it was stymied for the most part, until a moment of individual brilliance by Jordynn Dudley, who steadied a long ball with her foot, then headed it twice to herself on the run into the box and calmly finished it for the winning goal was maybe the single greatest goal I've ever seen by a collegiate women's soccer player. If you want to know the main reason FSU is advancing and A&M is not, players like Dudley (the freshman of the year nationally) are signing with FSU and not A&M. To move beyond the 2nd/Sweet 16 rounds, Coach G must start landing these type of difference makers in front of goal.

Tonight, as has been the problem over the last 3 seasons, A&M could not finish easy chances in front of goal. Mia Pante, who was our most dangerous player tonight, headed a ball that deflected off the crossbar that would have given us a 1-0 lead and the momentum in the first half. Then in the second half, Boeckmann missed a wide-open shot from 6 yards out that was pushed wide by the GK. And finally, Sammy Smith missed a header in front of goal that the GK pushed over the top to save the game from going to OT. Those are 3 golden chances, that if any are converted, the game is probably decided in PKs.

Unfortunately, the midfield was ineffective as expected and couldn't hold any extended possession against FSU, who dominated most of the play throughout the match. A&M was relegated to kicking the ball long from the back line to the forwards and hoping for a counter attacking opportunity. There were times when this strategy worked, especially in the first half, when A&M had outshot FSU 4-0 at one point. But again, no one could finish in front of goal. There also were a few turnovers by FSU in the midfield that I thought should have resulted in scoring chances for us, but the midfield couldn't effectively setup the passes needed for those shots. But A&M stayed in the game because it forced FSU to hold possession in wide parts of the field and not in front of goal, and the few times they got the ball in front of the box, they were quickly shutdown by the defense.

The backline was stellar for the most part, with Margo Matula having her best game this season. She was everywhere and made several key tackles to keep FSU off the board. Calzada also had a very good game, running down FSU's vaunted forwards and blocking their attempts throughout the match. One of FSU's forwards was visibly frustrated and complained to the referee the entire match when she couldn't get past Calzada. FSU was held to 1 goal for only the second time this season. The good news is that we return everyone next year and we add the injured Bella James, so I expect this will be a very good unit again.

A&M did improve in the last few weeks of the season, especially after the historic loss against Vandy, but if we had taken care of business earlier in the season by finishing chances in front of goal, we are not playing FSU in the second round and probably in the Sweet 16 right now. So overall the season will be considered acceptable after what happened the last 2 years, but we were also very close to missing the tourney altogether. 2024 needs to be a step forward for the program, so with the amount of turnover to the roster (graduation and a few other transfers), it will be critical for the coaches to add a few elite players from the portal, especially in the midfield and a dependable striker. The incoming freshmen will probably not make a huge impact unless the evals are better than expected (I'm anxious to see the late addition Jaime Perrault though). There could be some other losses like Hayes (who didn't play tonight due to injury) and maybe a few others as well. So, 2024 will be a critical season for Coach G to show that the program is not stagnant or continuing to slowly decline. This season stopped the bleeding, but now we need to take a step forward next year.

Great effort, Ladies. As virtually everyone else has said, we are a day late and a dollar short of scoring vital goals. And, like most of the year, good fortune just eluded us.

Thanks to HIdden and all the others who have provided expert analysis to those of us who are at best soccer amateurs when it comes to technical understanding of the game.

Let's hope next season is one where we can take a big step forward.

Congrats ladies. Have enjoyed watching you perform in a rough and tumble game. Proud of you. Fl State had to work. I'll be in the stands next year.

The hangover setting in on a less than stellar season

Are we a defensive team? ranked 139 (59)
Are we an attacking team? Couldn't score
Was the plan to hope for individual brilliance?

The inability to pick a lineup and win games we should have cruised thru led to playing the #1 seed round 2

FYI there are no elite strikers just out there ready to come to a mid program

We don't need a striker we need a philosophy

That was another promising squad that ended up underachieving all season.

The girls gave it their all, but being a mid program is what we are and it ain't gonna change.

It was enjoyable at times but that was with no big wins and a horrible Vandy game

When they were free to play with your 2 best mids the 2nd half our girls attacked and gave FSU more than they wanted
Why not play that way all year?

Oh well - Hoping we keep our Jrs but wouldn't be shocked if they transfer and play another 2 years

Let's hope 2024 is the year

We scored 0 goals in 7 games this year. Hard to win a lot of games doing that.

Not the result we wanted, but we kept the game close against the top team in the country due to the defense. Coaches have to work with the backline going into next season to do a better job connecting with the midfield. You can't' control the middle of the field if you keep passing it up. I also question the coaches having Caldwell not pass out wide to your outside backs on goal kicks. Is this a confidence issue with the ball at the defenders feet or is easier to just let your goalie send the long ball instead of your defenders. This is not the way a possession team plays. Possession was 63% FSU / 37% A&M. As others have said finishing has been an issue and it continued tonight with 3 solid opportunities. We have a lot of talented players, but this style of play will only take you so far playing the top teams in the country unless you have a dominate forward who can score. We have a lot to build on going into next season, but the next step this team makes depends on the coaches.

Until next season.

it's not just a striker. again, this is who Coach G is. but, we have a very hard time as a university admitting that.

I have to disagree a bit here. I think coach G coaches with what he has. If he had a true striker or two that has great balls skills and was a blood hound for the goal and could really stretch the midfield, I can guarantee he would be doing that. Is he not able to recruit that specific player? Probably. For that reason, and if we want to win a national championship should we move on from G? Also, probably. I guess what my point is, is that he does well with what he has on the roster. Does he have some solid and young pieces for next year? Yes.

Pante is our biggest threat! See her shot off the crossbar.

Should she be at forward?

Pretty tough to see that had we beaten FSU, we most likely take out Texas and then play Pittsburgh to go to the College Cup. It was there for the taking.

She had the most shots taken of all the players on our team this year. But also the lowest percentage finishing. She can be very dangerous, but needs to really work on getting her shot under control. As you say, she seems to be our biggest threat. Now, if she can add finishing those threats.

Her shots are either wide high or right at the keeper

There is a reason she plays LB for Canada

She ain't a forward but is a great midfielder and would be an elite LB
