Texas A&M Soccer returns to play on Sunday as they embark on their second road trip of the season. The Aggies head down the road to Houston for a 7PM Sunday match at Rice. They've yet to leave the state this season. That first out of state game won't come for another couple of weeks.
Rice is a familiar opponent for the Aggies. A&M has played Rice 7 times, leading the series 7-1. Last season, the Ags beat rice 1-0. The lone Aggie loss in the series came at Rice in 2020 (2-3 OT). In a related note, a name you might find familiar on Rice's roster is graduate transfer Sarah Piper. Sarah is Grace Piper's sister, who played for A&M a few years back.
The Owls have had a few good years under 5th year coach, Brian Lee. However, this season has started out miserably.
Rice is 2-4-1 on the season through a very weak, albeit travel-heavy schedule. Those losses include a 0-2 loss at Incarnate Word, a 0-6 loss at Texas, a 1-2 loss to Houston (their only home game thus far), and a 0-2 loss at Loyola Maryland. They did get wins at Texas Southern (5-2) and at Northwestern State (2-1). The tie came at Sam Houston (2-2).
This is a better team than Grambling, so don't expect another 8-0 final. But it should be a comfortable win for the Aggies to get them back to .500. Let's hope for another clean sheet too.
