We're going to be in Scotland just outside of Glasgow next week and neither Rangers or Celtic are playing while we're there.

My goof was not realizing it was an international break and checking the National team schedule.....because Scotland is playing England in Glasgow while we're there. Ticket prices are just too steep for me now so we'll just watch it in a pub.

But man, that would have been awesome if I had my stuff together and caught that sooner.

Me to my coworker in Scotland: "Who do you support?"

Him: "Scotland and whoever's playing against England."

Possible save.....

My mother was born in Edinburgh and her father was not big into sports but her uncles were and supported Hearts.

I was going through my mom's scrapbook and came across this picture of my great great uncle, James Thomson (the family name was Thomson but he added the P later in life when he moved to England).....based upon it and the note my mom made, I'm thinking is possible that he played for Hearts.

The club has a historian (awesome job) so I emailed him and he said that there was a Thomson that played in 1916, which is in the timeframe that I would estimate this picture was taken.

I sent him the photo to see if he could identify any of the players.

Now, I do think it is odd that he is wearing something different than the other guys - but it does look like a kit and he does match the guy at the far left (partially cut out of photo) who is clearly wearing soccer socks.

It could just be a coincidence and the photo is of my great great uncle as a fan with players.....or my mom mislabeled the photo altogether....but it'll be interesting to see if they can ID the photo to 1916

Nerding out here while I wait for a script to break (or succeed, maybe I should be optimistic).

I found a site that shows old uniforms:
http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Scottish_Football_League/Scotland_Index.htm

The majority of these guys definitely look like Hearts from that era. But your Thomson does not. No vertical stripes for Hearts ever, so it's not like he's wearing a previous year's kit during practice or something.

I have a nerdy theory: maybe he moved to an opposing team after playing for Hearts in 1916? Then he posed with his old teammates after a game. His uniform (and the dude on the far left) look like it could be 1920-21 St. Bernard's FC which was also in Edinburgh (and dissolved in WWII)… or perhaps Leith Athletic which was nearby.

If something like that we're true, he could've told the person who took these notes "this was my team - Hearts" and it'd be a true statement, but he just didn't happen to play for them anymore.

Maybe this was their 1916-17 jersey unveiling and he's rocking the 3rd jersey while everyone else is sporting the homes.

But seriously, I'm interested to hear what comes of this. Very cool.

The historian is out of the office for a few days so the mystery continues.

The more I think about this the less I think he was on the team.

I found more info on him in my mom's scrapbook....he was 2 years older than my great, great grandfather who was born in 1889, so that would have put our James Thomson as being born in 1887. So if this picture was indeed in 1916, he would have been 29 years old, which seems old....but maybe it wasn't back then?

Your point on the kit not matching the era is pretty soild. I started wondering if maybe his jersey is a keeper kit....but I came across this:

https://londonhearts.com/scores/newplayers/h02262.html

Our mystery "Thomson" only played in 1 match in 1916 (or ever), and it has him listed at "inside left" so thst ruled out that possibility.

It seems very unlikely that he would be wearing a random jersey as a fan back in an era when suits and hats were worn in public. I wonder if maybe he just trained with them one day? Or maybe they were short handed in a match as younger men of the era were off to war? Then that being said, I'm pretty sure he did serve so that would rule him out completely....that's probably the info I need to chase down.

(unrelated but he didn't get married until 1921, which means he was 34 when married, which seems really old for that era)

I'll keep yall updated as I get more info

I've got a similar mystery I'd like to get solved. Supposedly my FIL's dad played for Tranmere after the war but I can't find any record of it. They have pictures of him in the kit from the late 40s/early 50sbbInternet searches are complicated by the fact that my FIL has the same name and has a pretty broad internet presence and even worse their surname is a fairly famous one on Mersey side.

Hope you solve this.

That's so awesome.

I missed a trip to Glasgow in 2020.

We were going to spend a week in Ireland then 10 days in Glasgow. My daughter was going to train with the Celtic academy.

We were going to a Champions league qualifier.

****ing Covid.
