I have no idea how they make it all work. Rumors (it's June, every team is linked with every player) are they're also looking into Busquets, Suarez, Jordi Alba (i.e. Did you play for Barcelona between 2008-2015? Congrats, we'd like to offer you a contract!). But the salary cap issue will be a difficult hurdle to jump. I think they would all basically have to play for less than $1M/year (less than $22k/week when they're all used to $200k+) and somehow renegotiate the contracts of Josef Martinez, Pizarro, and Yedlin, their highest earners, to get under the cap. Maybe renegotiate DP status?

I mean, I am sure the MLS will give them some sort of special treatment and carve out a "luxury tax" or something to make it all work. You don't turn down the opportunity to have the greatest individual player of all time play in your league.

In other news, Barcelona released a petty statement with Laporta saying he "understood and respected Messi's decision to want to compete in a league with fewer demands...and pressure." What a dumb move and completely uncalled for, in my opinion. Firstly, there's no need to make a statement about a player that you missed out on and hasn't played for your club in two years, regardless of him being the greatest player to ever play for your club. Secondly, you cannot blame him for seeking another opportunity based on the way Barcelona has operated the last 2-3 years. Their finances are a complete sh*t show. They were blaming the club's highest earners for their position, but Messi, Suarez, Busquets, Pique, Alba, etc are all gone now (some even took pay cuts and deferments to help alleviate the situation) and they still can't seem to get under La Liga's salary cap regulations. They have been poorly managed and have run out of "financial levers' to pull. Messi was reportedly made some promises about how they could get him back to Barcelona and it smelled of the same things he was told in 2021 and decided he did not want to go through that debacle again. Even if he played for free, his salary cap hit would be too much bc La Liga bases the hit, among other factors, on previous earnings. The guy has made more money than he knows what to do with and decided to make this next decision based on what his family wanted rather than solely on money. Sort your own house first, Barcelona, before you throw shade at someone else.

I also read that Barca was going to have to cut salaries of some players, to make it work, and he was having no part of that.

You are spot on.....it is 100% their own fault for the situation they put themselves, their fans, and their players in.

While I do think it's just a matter of time before all of their shenanigans catch up with them, they just won La Liga by 10 points. Definitely hasn't caught up with them yet.

Great for the sport in the US.

Ronaldo to LAFC or NYCFC after his contract is up would be nice. Already has property there.

Griezmann would join Miami. Though not sure that would work if they get Di Maria.

The question on my mind, has Messi ever been to Miami in the south?

Or for that matter, any of the southern cities?

That first match he's going to be like, que mierda

South Florida isn't the south. There are 480k jews in south Florida. And Miami is over 3/4 Hispanic. Neither are bad things before anyone gets offended, just pointing out it's its own world of unique demographics.
But he bought a house there 2 years ago, so I'm sure he's spent time there, he knows what he's getting. Probably for just this reason, a good two year trial run to make sure he's comfortable. I want to say I remember a story from a year or two ago where he was spending some time there and seemed happy with the relative anonymity.
The bigger culture shock will be when he has to fly 4 hours to see a place like Kansas City, or a seven hour flight to Seattle just to play a regular season game. And then another one for Portland. And LA, and San Jose…

Inter Miami now has more instagram followed than any other pro team in the US. (NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA). They went from 1 million to over 6 in 24 hours

It's the temperature and they play in the spring summer fall and not fall winter spring.

Feel like this is going to be a real life Ted Lasso "Zava" situation in the locker room. The other players are just going to sit and stare at him the first time he shows up.

Pretty sure he has played a few games in tropical conditions in CONMEBOL.

I think the bigger shock will be away games up north in the early spring or late fall.

He and other top footballers have vacation homes in Miami including Neymar amd Sergio Ramos. It's part of why this is so exciting bc of the potential domino effect.

Couldn't have happened in a better city. Props to Beckham he's who made all of this possible. But even his arrival to US pales in comparison to Messi's.

You realize European clubs play fall through spring, right?

I could be wrong, but I'd like to think that games in Toronto, Montreal, Columbus, etc have the potential to be the coldest games he's ever played in. Certainly colder than anything in La Liga.

Even if he's faced colder games in France, he did so while training in cold weather too. In contrast, you get 50+ degree differences in temperature between Miami and northern venues in MLS.

But "shock" is certainly a bit hyperbolic so you caught me there.

Don't see how weather will be much of a factor other than the potential for lengthy weather delays in the rainy summer. The biggest difference to playing MLS vs La Liga or Ligue 1 is the travel factor. There are much longer travel distances in the MLS than those leagues. We frequently hear that from players at Orlando who've come from Europe.

Excited to see him play but I'm expecting some blowback from casual fans when they see how bad the rest of the Miami team is. That's not a shot at MLS by the way but at the Miami front office that have bungled their roster management and currently sit in last place in their conference. They've consistently put one of the worst products in MLS out on the field and will need to do a lot better to get the most out of signing Messi. I'm sure he knows where the team currently sits in league standings so he must know this is will take a couple years before the team competes. It will be interesting to see how Messi reacts to being on a team that doesn't compete for championships.

It looks like they're trying to get the gang(s) back together for Messi...so they might change their fortunes quickly if they can work it all out.

They'd have to move other players already signed at DP salaries or convince new players to take salaries low enough they can be bought down with allocation money below the DP limit. Anyone over the maximum salary of about $600k has to count as a designated player (3 per team I think) or their salary can be bought down below the DP limit with allocation money. The allocation pool is an odd mechanism used by MLS to encourage teams to keep more senior players. It would be suspicious if all Messi's friends take salaries well below what they can get elsewhere so they can fit in MLS salary structure. I seem to recall that Miami lost some of their allocation money from trying to skirt salary cap rules previously so that may still be in play to handcuff them.

Some of the rumors I've heard discussed included raising the number of DPs per team from 3 to 5 and creating a trading window where players could be actively shopped between teams for value rather than GAM. The latter is confusing except that the proposed options would make it easier for players to be traded with the result that Miami could shop their current roster to accommodate new players.
