Worse loss in program history?

Some of the worst back half defense I have ever seen! Yikes! Absolutely not acceptable at this level and with this talent. Just bad soccer this year.

It's been hard to watch this team almost all season now. We've discussed most of it before. Lack of technical skill on the ball, poor passes, bad decision making, poor touch, lack of finishing in front of goal, mental toughness, and inability to stay composed late in matches. The fact is we're watching something unfold this season that we've never seen at A&M, a bad soccer team. Yes, there have been critical injuries that hampered development and chemistry and a lot of different lineups and players out of their comfort zone, but the lack of accountability and even disinterest at times with this group has been unacceptable. And, quite frankly, some coaching delusion in thinking this team was much better than it actually is because we can all see the product on the field. It doesn't lie. A&M can still make the SEC tournament by winning its last two games, but there is little hope of actually winning it and making the NCAA tourney. I don't see how this team avoids the label of first to miss the NCAAs.

There just aren't any excuses for these players or the coaches. Mississippi St is a horrendous program (the worst in the SEC historically) and they are having another terrible season. A&M had never lost to them. The sad fact is that the Bulldogs outplayed A&M for most of the match and deserved the win. They exploited our weaknesses and lack of composure late in games. They had two point blank misses in the first half that would have given them a comfortable lead, so the 1-0 A&M lead was misleading anyway. They scored two goals in the last four minutes and should have scored a third if not for Katie Smith's deflection off a shot that was on target just minutes earlier. That is the definition of what a choke job looks like. It really does seem that A&M finds ways to lose games and that's always a sign of a poor team in any sport. This is just rock bottom for A&M tonight. A truly embarrassing loss.

Someone mentioned that this looked like a high school match and I was thinking the exact same thing at times tonight. Disorganized, frantic, fundamentally challenged soccer. No midfield presence or possession. Two bad teams in a pillow fight. Outside of possibly Katie Smith and Sample, no one really played well tonight. I've never seen a team that loves to stop its own momentum forward by stopping and playing to its backline more than A&M. Maybe it's because the backline is the only group that can complete passes to one another. The change at GK seemed to work until the last few minutes when Burbank badly misjudged a cross that happened to float into the back corner of the goal. Not sure why we made the change, but whatever.

There's going to be a lot of soul searching and tough decisions that the coaches will need to make in the offseason because this season has been unacceptable despite the injury issues. This team doesn't have chemistry on the field. We are badly in need of some injection of difference makers. Some misses in recruiting are hurting us. The transfer portal should be used quite a bit unfortunately. My biggest concern is the acceptance of mediocre play and losing is setting in with this young team, something that can be very difficult to turn around in the future. Coach G has to do whatever it takes to avoid the program continuing its decline next season.

Saw a tweet from David Ellis that the MSU soccer pressbox had Ethernet and wireless LAN issues last night so no radio broadcast. I was going to watch the game replay on the ESPN Watch app and can't get that. I wanted to see what happened on the winning goal. What I remember is that Burbank had a goal kick to one of our players but she wasn't able to control the ball and it bounced away to a MSU player who then played it wide.
12 hours later and I'm still in shock. We will learn a lot about the team these last 2 games.

Honestly despite what the announcers kept saying about the winning goal being amazing skill it just shows how little they know about soccer. It was exactly the bad luck this team has had all year a miss hit cross that put floated to the back left corner and the keeper could not get enough of a touch to keep it out of the goal. It was more fluke than skill but sometimes that is all you need. Even so the last 5 minutes of the game were terrible by the aggies.

Anybody else see in the 2Q i believe when the MS GK kicked a long arcing kick toward our goal.

5 or 6 of their team formed a phalanx running toward our goal! Luckily, the ball went to our GK!

NOT a single Ag defender was in the picture!
