I'm in the middle of a summer class and can't want the opening game. Maybe there will be some Russian hooligans that delay the start until about 10:30 or so.

Random question for the US fans: How y'all holding up today? I'm still in a really weird place, personally.

I'm dealing with the sadness of us not making it, but I'm also super pumped that my literal favorite sporting event is starting. I kind of figured that opening day would cause the joy to override the sadness... but the sadness isn't going anywhere. The two emotions are just awkwardly existing next to each other. Like divorced parents at a birthday party.

And as the kickoff gets closer, neither emotion gives up. They only intensify.

tl;dr - Russia takes it today 2-0

I'm with you. I'm excited for the event. But it just sucks too.

We were going to go for our honeymoon, even bought the scarves from the B/CS Outlaws and everything... so still pretty bummed.

I can't decide if I want to commit to Mexico as a bit to annoy my friends, or just do the easy thing and go with England because like a quarter of the team are Spurs players.

This Opening Ceremony is cringe worthy. Just bring in Shakira and call it a day.

Perfectly stated. It pisses me off I'm going to be damn near forty by the time the US is back in the greatest sporting event in the world. Yet, I'm pumped just to see some great soccer.

It just dawned on me. I will be retired by the time WC 2026 rolls around. So I will have tons of free time to go venue to venue.

We screwed the pooch and don't deserve to be there, but watching these two teams play the equivalent level of my Wednesday night over 30 Men's League kinda sucks.

I was in Paramedic school summer of 2010 and we still watched every game in class. You aren't trying hard enough

Everyone always has laptops and tablets in class. I had to tell them that once games start I dont want to see them watching games. The problem is one guy watches on a laptop and now 10 minutes later 8 guys behind him are watching it and no one is staying on task. It sucks but I know what it was like 4 years ago.

Every WC the US gets knocked out at some point, so I am used to enjoying it without them. Typically I'm super bumbed for a day or two and then I just get over it and have fun. I'm passed the sad phase and now I just want to see great soccer and pretty foreign ladies.

I got into a youtube loop today and ended up watching the "Write the Future" Nike campaign commercial for the 2010 world cup...I gotta say the ending where Ronaldo is standing over a free kick, and the future that is riding on that kick involves the unveiling of a Ronaldo statue...nice job Nike, you made the statue look way too good though.
