Will the SEC ever get Mens Soccer?

Lacrosse? Wow, that's bit of a reach. Plenty of soccer played in Texas, but not much lacrosse. We already have a dedicated soccer facility.

I don't think Byrne was joking. I'd heard him speak on it a few times. Yeah, cost was part of it (cost of insurance especially) but so was the speed in which we'd be able to compete. We actually have several bowling trophies from back in the day.

One of the appeals of adding men's soccer for me is the talent we already have in state. Most of these kids are leaving the state to play.

yeah, but no one cares about bowling. Ok, there is that occassional guy that is into bowling but it's not the same as Soccer.

If we're discussing women's bowling just in context of what women's sport we want to add to off set men's soccer, then I'm all for women's bowling.

That's the context. Cheap sport to counter adding a men's sport.

And maybe a few championships.

But yeah, I'm not expecting a passionate bowling fanbase. Nor do I care about bowling.

I'm sure we'd have as many bowling fans as most schools have women's soccer fans.

Mississippi State wishes they could pull that many fans for soccer.

Byrne came from Nebraska, which has a strong bowling team. I don't think he was joking, he viewed it as an easy addition, in part because he was familiar with the sport.

Hyman comes from the SEC, and we are now in the SEC, which has a strong gymnastics base. I would expect our next addition will be women's gymnastics.

As noted earlier in the thread, Florida recently added women's lacrosse. They play in the American Lacrosse conference, along with Vanderbilt and some Big Ten schools. Lacrosse is quite popular over here on the east coast, but I can't imagine A&M adding it before women's gymnastics or men's soccer.

The next sport A&M will add will be women's gymnastics because of the strong SEC teams and the fact that we could instantly be a top program with all the talented kids in Texas to choose from.

I can buy that, but I think we are years off from adding anything. Not until Kyle Field is completed and full.

Not to sidetrack this thread, but along those same lines, how they do Kyle may end up determining if we were in a position to add sport. We're expecting a windfall from SEC TV rights, but if we eat up that additional revenue with debt service for the stadium project, it may be a very long time before we think about adding anything. On the other hand, if the renovation can be paid for with donations, naming rights, and/or suite/club seat revenue, without tapping that additional SEC TV revenue, that may give us the room to think about adding a couple of sports.

Women's gymnastics would certainly be more appealing than bowling. That said, it's an expensive sport to field.

Just looking at a couple other SEC schools, gym. has about 18 roster spots, don't know how many are scholarship. Seems like most schools have 15000+ sqft training facility.

So you add that and soccer then you have to build another licker room for the men and then a practice facility for woman gym. Could combine that with another sport I guess.

I tried to find some attendance figures but didn't find them. I know it's in tv a bunch, I know Bama packs it in for gym. Would we do that?

Like twk said, depending on how much debt we have to carry for Kyle will most likely determine IF we add anything in the me 5-10 yrs.

It's 100% going to be a very long time before we add anything. Nothing discussed in this thread is going to happen in the next 20 years. It's just an off-season discussion to pass the time.

Agree it will take a long time. It is going take a while for the existing teams to make adjustments to the new conference.

I think it could happen with in 5-10 years.

This was tweeted today.

"@schreckc13:I heard from a friend at UH that a soccer program is already being planned. Any validity to that?" I'll ask Joseph Duarte.

I think women's gymnastics has a maximum of 12 scholarships.

Netum Steed is 23-24 thousand square feet and a lower roof, just for comparison's sake. So, nothing absurdly huge.

When the time comes, whenever it may be, creative planning could probably fit this it pretty neatly into an improved west campus (via a long term, multi-stage project, of course).

We won't be done building and improving facilities for current sports in 5-10 years.

Cdub06 nailed it. Womens gymnastics would be the sport to add. The SEC is one of the best conferences in Womens gymnastics. 6 schools field teams.

OU has terrific gymnastics program and former big8ers were all wrestling schools - we never added either...
Would definitely support both women's gymnastics and men's soccer at A&M though.

Three or four Big 12 schools had gymnastics. However, gymnastics is on a whole different level in the SEC.

An offer:
For the next 20 years each season that A&M doesn't have men's soccer or gymnastics you buy me a season ticket to women's soccer. For each season that A&M does have men's soccer or gymnastics I'll buy you a season ticket to that new sport.

Any takers?

More $$ needed or your going to have to eliminate some sports. Who's willing to "dig deep" and support more athletics?
