Although A&M destroyed one of the worst teams in the nation today 13-1, I really don't understand the point of playing these type of games at all. They are glorified scrimmages with nothing but a major downside in that some key players could get hurt. Well, that's exactly what happened today. Shea Groom, Rachel Lenz, Bianca Brinson, and Katie Perry all went down with injuries, a few minor and a few more serious. Why in the world would arguably our most dynamic player be on the field with 10 minutes left in a match? Yes, it was an ugly foul that should have been a red card, but now we have to sweat out some x-rays and the possibility that Shea could be out for a while. It just doesn't make any sense. At least it was an ankle/foot and not a knee. I would honestly rather just not play games like this and take a bye to keep everyone healthy and get added rest. There's no requirement to play 19 games as far as I know. North Carolina is only playing 16 games in the regular season, why don't we do the same?
- Annie Kunz just finds ways to score. She's not flashy, but she is very effective. She's starting to remind me of Ashlee Pistorious in her ability to score when she's near the goal and the ball is anywhere near her feet (or head). Another hat trick today and she leads the Big 12 in goals.
- Kelley Monogue is improving rapidly and is getting better and better. She has pretty much nailed down a starting spot alongside Merritt Mathias.
- Shea Groom had a good game and scored a couple of goals. She was active and a menace to the Fordham back line. Her injury is obviously the biggest concern going forward for this team.
- Katie Perry had a terrific game today and it was great to see her get her rhythm back after not playing against Baylor. The added rest has helped her get her legs back as I think she's had a tough time adjusting to this climate.
- Chelsea Jones is playing well right now, another good game in the middle and another nice header for goal.
- Beth West started today and she had another solid performance. She is almost back to her old form and it's fun to see her team with Chelsea in the middle of the field.
- Bri Young finally saw her first action of the season today and looked sharp for being out for so long. She even had a few free kicks on goal. I wish she would have redshirted, but we need to use her fully now if she's back. I expect her to eventually start on the back line with Meghan Streight in the center, which will allow Rachel Lenz to move back to the outside.
It was a good rebound game for A&M after an off night against a physical Baylor squad. Let's hope they can keep this momentum heading into Iowa State on Friday. We're in the easiest stretch of the season so there's no room for any missteps now.
