Away Goals ?

I have a couple questions about the away goals format. I know the MLS uses aggregate but was wondering how the the away goals scenario plays out in certain situations.

1) Chicago beat DC 1-0 in Chicago. If DC would have beat Chicago last night 10-1 does that mean that mean according to the away goals format that Chicago still would have went through?

2) Another scenario. Lets say Chelsea draws 0-0 at stamford bridge. Then they go to Anfield and lose to Liverpool 2-1. Does L-pool advance on thh strength of the victory or does chelsea advance on away goals? I would say l-pool.

Thanks.

The away goals rule doesn't apply unless there is a tie in aggregate goals.

1. MLS doesn't use the away goals rule, but if they did and DC had won 10-1 last night, the aggregate score would be DC 10-2 Chicago. DC advances because they lead on aggregate by 8 goals.

2. Liverpool would advance because the aggregate goals are 2-1.

Now, to demonstrate a situation in which the away goal situation would apply, lets now say Chelsea wins 1-0 at Stamford bridge. Then they go to Anfield and lose to Liverpool 2-1. Aggregate goals are tied 2-2, but Chelsea advance because they scored 1 away goal to Liverpool's 0.

Away goals is only taken into account if the aggregate score is a DRAW.

So what happens in situation 1 above? Each team won a game, Chicago has one away goal and DC has 0. DC wins on aggregate but if you go to away goals it is Chicago.

So it has to be a draw for away goals to come into play? So if Chelsea draw at Stanford bridge with liverpool 0-0 and lose at anfield 2-1. Chelsea would win on away goals but they havent acutally won a game?

Sorry, got it. So it is aggregate first then away goals. Thanks.

I already told you what happens in situation above. The aggregate score is 10-2, so DC advances. The away goals are irrelevant.

Again, away goals don't matter unless the aggregate score is a draw. In this situation, the aggregate score is 2-1 and Liverpool advances. Away goals are irrelevant.

In MLS, away goals have no bearing at all. This was discussed on the MLS quarterfinals thread.

It was also discussed in the original post on this thread. Nobody was ever confused about that.
