My wife is looking to sell her 1975 FJ40. We built this beast two years ago specifically for a trip to Big Bend National Park where we used it to climb mountains and take on miles and miles of off-road trails.
The good the bad and the ugly:
Good - Orignial F2 Engine runs strong and cranks right up every time. Original trans and transfer case function perfectly. We took it down to bare metal and removed all of the rust, but I'm not a body man so a lot of the holes were filled with filler. The larger holes were patched with sheet metal. It has a two year old paint job. Hand rolled Monstaliner protects the exterior and interior from the elements. New Bestop Seats, all gauges work, fairly new BFG 35's. New warrior half doors. New Bestop Bikini Top.
Bad - This FJ40 was lifted by the previous owner flipping the axles under the springs. This worked well but caused steering to the left to be a bit of a challenge. The turning radius to the right is much better. One of the prior owners welded the rearend so it is locked all the time. This is no big deal but it does chirp a bit around corners on the road.
Ugly - The engine bay was not detailed or painted to match the body. There is minor surface rust on the roll bar. We took it down to bare metal and painted it with a bed liner/undercarriage paint, but it didn't really do the trick. This would be an easy fix. We don't have the hard top. We have full doors but they are in need of restoration. If you want a full top, Cruiser Corps in OKC can get you the necessary used parts for about $2400.
