I spent about a half hour last night destroying Tech fans Lincoln-Douglas style on the comment section to the "Vick 'em" article on ESPN, and I kept getting the same argument that a couple of years ago a group of Aggies burned Tech's mascot horse to death. Did that really happen? Can anyone provide a source for the incident? I couldn't find one.

Did NOT happen. Sadly, and I am NOT being sarcastic, Tech has had some accidents with their horse, but they had nothing to do with us.

yeah, that's what i thought. i tried a couple google searches and could only (ironically) find some articles on how their horse's have killed themselves running into walls and such.

u really felt the need to verify that a group of Aggies did/did not burn the Raiders horse to death..drinking early or what?

adderol early. it doesn't take too much time to do about 4 google searches and then post on a forum...and my interest was only piqued due to the fact that about two thirds of red raiders i saw comment last night were absolutely sure this happened. there is relevance.

I think I remember years ago, tu stole the horse mascot and painted it burnt orange and the horse eventually died from it. All indications were this was an accident and not intended from the pranksters.

I was on cannon crew for the tceh game in 92. When we fired the cannon for the opening kickoff, the tceh horse spooked, reared up, and fell down on its side on the track, throwing his rider. Everyone was alright, but the horse was so spooked the rest of the game that they just kept it circling back by the vistors locker room. One of the funniest things I've ever witnessed.

Painting an animal is bad enough, but those damn fools used an oil based burnt orange paint instead of water based which resulted in having to euthanize the horse.

From a Tech website:

In1963, before Tech played Texas A&M, Tech Beauty was stolen and couldn't be found before the game. Charcoal Cody, also a Masked Rider horse for years, was the stand-in for Tech Beauty, and the mare was finally discovered on the Sunday after the game. For three days she had been hobbled and locked in a shed near of Idalou, without food or water. The letters AMC (possibly meaning A&M College) had been sprayed on her side with aluminum paint. Some reports state that her mane had been haphazardly clipped as well. The mare died the following spring due to complications during foaling.

What? I am pretty well versed in Aggie traditions and lore - but this is new to me. Do we have a second source?

I do know that a guy I was in grad school--a returning vet who had graduated at about that time, claimed to have been part of a group that borrowed all the mascots except shasta while they were in school...attempts to do this were pretty common back in the day, and the mascots were returned unharmed. I don't think the foaling death would be related to the kidnapping?

From the above link, it was the sips that painted the horse and led to the rumors of paint killing the horse. However, some of the Black Helicopter Crowd at tceh claims that Aggies stole the horse right before their game with t.u. and painted the horse orange. Right......
quote:
The last known prank against a Tech horse was in 1975. Joe Kim King, that year's Masked Rider, decided to make his home town, Brady, Texas, the halfway point for the journey to Austin for the Tech-University of Texas football game. His father, a veterinarian, allowed King to board the horse, Happy V, at his facilities. Sometime during the night the horse was painted over his hindquarters, tail and back legs with orange paint. Initial reports said that the horse would never recover from burns received from the toxic enamel paint. King was quoted in the Sept. 23, 1975 issue of The U.D. as saying, "I never thought this would happen in Brady. It's my fault because I didn't guard the horse. I'll know in the future that you have to watch out at all times." Happy V recovered in time to finish the football season but died in 1978 after suffering a ruptured intestine. Some sources speculated that the horse died due to the effects of the toxic paint, but that was never confirmed. Larry Cade, that year's Masked Rider, said the horse had been suffering from colic "for some time" before his death.

I thought the Tech mascot committed suicide rather than go through another dismal football season on the High Plains.

If that 1963 story is true, those Aggies should be ashamed of themselves. Kidnapping is one thing, animal cruelty is another.

That's a horrible story and really pisses me off as an Aggie (if true)

Total BS! The horse was kidnapped in '63 and returned unharmed.

There was a rumor that the vet students artificially inseminated her with jackass semen.....perhaps the shame of bearing a mule caused her to expire.

I actually know Kim King. I had heard stories about the horse being painted before their game against t.u., but never realized that it was while he was the masked rider or that it happened in Brady.

The story about burning the tech horse is a fabrication. As a matter of fact when I was in Vet School during the A&M/Tech game we actually evaluated the Tech mascot for lameness because the horse had been limping prior to the game...

It's all DAMAGE CONTROL. They're getting hammered by the media, so they're just trying to deflect from the typical Tech behaviors/crap in so much that they've now gone to the extent to say that we kill their mascots. Total BS and very typical of Tech. Is it ever a question why we refer to them as "classless clowns" and will never get our true respect?

Animal cruelty? Was that even a phrase in '63?

The game mentioned where the horse for no reason charged head first into the wall and killed itself was against none other than New Mexico, coached by one Dennis Franchione.

100% of ttech fans thought they had the right to shove a goalpost into the stands where the Aggies were visiting after the game, and felt that it was the Aggies fault for being in the stands in the first place.

Starting to see a pattern yet?

The horse died one year after it threw the rider and ran up a ramp, slipped, and fell into a wall. Sad story actually. As many times as that horse spooked they should have never had him at in the stadium or they should have replaced him.

No, the horse died on the spot when it hit the wall, not a year later.

What does the fact that it died months later have to do with it being kidnapped? That's pretty poor writing just to encite anger.

I think we should start stealing mascots again. Nowadays, all kinds of charges would be pressed against you.

Folks, these nimrods are going to believe whatever they want to believe. The football team needs to shut them up on Saturday, so we can move on what has become a truly scary annual event.

the year the horse ran into the wall and killed itself (true story...they dedicated a new saddle during the game and the saddle became loose later on and the rider fell off and the horse got spooked and ran down a tunnel and ran into the wall and killed itself)...a banner was hung out of a window in the quad that said "run tech into the wall" and had a picture of a horse running into a wall and breaking it's neck...i thought it was pretty funny...
