For those wondering about Rox Covert Chevrolet. Enormous texas booster. Many vehicles for athletic and administrative personnel come from Covert Chevy.

When the Tom Penders grade scandal hit the texas basketball program, a low level assistant took the fall in an official capacity for the university. That guy was given a job at Covert as a sales executive with a salary and no commission pay or requirements. A personal favor of the university, unofficially of course. I saw him in his office taking a nap when I went with a friend to get a vehicle.

Bastrop is far enough out of Austin that it is "out of sight, out of mind" so to speak.

It is all in this article if you read between the lines.

http://media.www.dailytexanonline.com/media/storage/paper410/news/2002/08/14/News/Jury-Clears.Penders.Of.Defamation-499993.shtml

Oran was perfectly fine taking his comfortable salary for not doing anything, but when the deposition was leaked from Axtell's trial, and Penders began to defame Oran, Oran took legal action and was eventually beaten in court.

What makes this story fishy is that Oran was at first seen as solely responsible in getting Tom Penders, the savior of UTs basketball program, fired from texas. Oran is seen in the Austin area and amongst texas longhorn alumni as public enemy number one. And he lands an $80,000 per year salaried job in 1998 at a well known longhorn booster's car dealership? Oil and water don't mix folks.

Rox Covert does what he is told in exchange for

My goodness, what a load. Paranoid much? There is absolutely nothing shady or illegal about Eddie Oran, the long-time assistant coach, getting a job with Covert after his coaching days. Oran was popular. And he is not public enemy number one - he is currently the color broadcaster for Texas basketball on the radio. He runs basketball camps in the community. Plus, Oran wasn't a "low level assistant". He was the head assistant coach for many, many years. Penders blamed him solely for the mess of the grade leak and Oran sued him for that.

Seriously... where do you guys come up with some of this stuff? To be honest, I don't even understand what you're insinuating. But it's a nice conspiracy theory whack job to make you feel better about something, I guess.

Car Dealerships don't like hiring felons to drive their cars around or park them. It's fishy! That is a fact Plano!!

Yes, a sprained ankle and broken collarbone reflect our trainer's inabilities to keep players healthy.

Or maybe not.

I thought car dealerships were generally known as the last hope for convicts. I don't think that has anything to do with cheating at A&M, OU, or UT.

No Peterson just liked visiting A&M again and again and again in the final 2 months of his decision. A&M was obviously his third choice behind Texas.

AD's dad should never have even BEEN in OKC. He was released to a half-way house in DALLAS. Magically, he somehow got a transfer to a half-way house in OK. Can anyone explain that one to me?

He requested a transfer, and it was granted. Whooptity do.

And I would like the link where Bomar said AD got more than him, and how he could not rat on AD or OU would ruin him.

I think you are referring to that trustworthy source JD Quinn, who was recently kicked off his second college football team. JD said nothing about AD.

Any more horse **** rumors I need to denounce, or are we done here?

Peterson's dad was in the federal prison system and not the state of Texas prison system.

My only opinions on the Big Red Sports situation are (will never get answers on these probably):

1-Peterson getting the use of a luxury car while his "Financing" was being worked out from a dealership that is run by a big booster WAS/IS an illegal inducement IMHO. The NCAA did not agree and they have the last word, but c'mon!

Getting a car like that with no source of income from a booster for that length of time is not a benefit any other person on the planet would get. I think he had it for several months? If that is wrong, it slightly diminishes my point, but does not cancel it out.

BOOSTER A gives car to star player. He gets to use it for a period of time and never pays for it?

How is that not a Booster giving a benefit to a player?

Forget blaming OU for that in terms of some conspiracy, but OU is responsible to the NCAA for the actions of its boosters.

Boggles my mind that this incident was not part of infractions.

2-I recognize that boosters do things that are impossible to control. I bet every school has rich boosters that might pass a few illegal benefits here and there that the school cannot catch. However, to have a ton of players working at one place and not be ALL OVER IT in terms of enforcement and monitoring smells fishy to me. One player was quoted as saying that Brett Veneables recommended Big Red if he needed a place to work.

All that said, I think OU's claim they were acting above and beyond the call of duty in terms of monitoring is laughable to me.

Not saying their penalties should be worse than they were, but their defense was "we caught this ourselves and we acted within a higher standard than what is required" stinks.

It went on for a long time and the school either A-Knew about it and did nothing(Major NO NO), B-Did not know about it (Shows lack of oversight).

Again, I recognize the high liklihood of similar situations at Texas/Texas A&M/etc. However, that is conjecture. We know what happened at Big Red. I'd love to hear honest debate from PG or other Sooners on these ponits without invoking Texas' history or A&M's history or random rumors or comments from the family of "Everyone does it"

Yeah, I'm sure that no one on the coaching staff was aware that AD was driving around a Lexus for six weeks or however long it was. And if any of the coaches did know I'm sure it never occured to them to ask AD what the situation with the car was. And even then, I'm sure none of them would have been immediately seen the problem with a six week test drive in a luxury vehicle. Nah, nothing to see here.

Are you 100% certain it was a ten year old car?

Seriously, I read (AND THIS COULD BE WRONG--ASKING, not calling you out) it was a $ 30-40k vehicle and a SUV. Lexus did not make a SUV in that time frame. Again, I might have facts wrong.

Still, regardless of that factoid. He got a car from a booster's car dealership. He did not pay for it.

Question: Why did he give it back? Again, my memory (WHICH COULD BE WRONG AS WELL) is that he returned it AFTER it was disclosed not that his financing fell through.

It sounds like my facts my be wrong so agian I ask for clarity, not to pick a fight.
Big Tuna
How long do you want to ignore this user?
PG, quit letting facts get in the way of rumor and hate!!! DAMN YOU PLANO GUY!!!

Objective, should AD have been driving a $15,000 vehicle for 6 weeks? No. It was stupid of the booster and AD. And we all know what an idiot that booster is.

Does OU hold some responsibility in this? Sure. The compliance department should have caught this a few weeks into the deal. But what in the hell do you want? OU/TX to be blacked out? To listen to OU/TAMU on the radio? To have arguably the best team in the conference lose a year of football? Over what?

Objective Texasguy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not at all. I don't mean to come across as saying OU deserved the death penalty.

I simply don't agree with the NCAA/OU that that incident was not a violation.

I also did not like OU's stance that they went ABOVE and BEYOND the call of duty in their monitoring and enforcement.

Look Texas, OU, and (yes) Texas A&M have benefited from the double standard the NCAA has for penalizing REVENUE schools vs. the SMU's/TCU's of the world.

Just cause it is so, don't make it right.

The penalty won't change and I don't have all the facts to change it if I could.

All I am saying is I think the situation stunk more than OU's response and I think OU's history of violations make for interesting context.

Ok, these guys are not what I'd call the best sources of info, but they did print the vehicle was new or newer than you indicate. SPlitting hairs as I still think use of any car for no cost provided by a booster for 6 weeks is a violation.

However, interesting exercise in how internet rumors and mis-info gets out.

Here is link and text contradicting 8 or 9 year old vehicle:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/big12/2006-08-28-oklahoma-peterson-cover_x.htm

TEXT-----When Peterson was spotted in a late-model Lexus several times last spring, for example, it spawned an investigation. He says he was test-driving it, and there was no NCAA violation.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=bayless/060804

TEXT------But driving a free new Lexus from Big Red Sports and Imports is not. Peterson got away with driving one for, reportedly, a month before it was brought to the attention of OU's compliance staff this past March.

What is your source on 8 or 9 year old car?

Again, not concerned on if that really matters, but interested if these printed facts are wrong or where you got info:

Wait, so you (PG) are saying that Stoops DID know that Peterson and booster were in the wrong...and surely if Stoops knew then OU's Compliance Dept. knew, then why did nothing come out of that? My honest question then is if Stoops knew, but the Compliance Dept. didn't, isn't that a bit on the suspicious side? And...if both of them knew of it, isn't that also a big "no no"? I have always highly regarded Bob Stoops, but with 2 players coming away from the program saying things like this, it makes me now cautious.

Here is more stink on this situation. Read the last line of this old story:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2413962

"Oklahoma also investigated the employment of football players by the dealership but found no violations." April 2006

Now read this:

http://www.tulsaworld.com/sports/sportsextra/stories/ou_sportsxtra.asp?s=070331_2_B1_GWorl85100&sp=fb

scroll towards bottom:

March 3, 2006: OU and the NCAA enforcement staff receive an anonymous e-mail alleging OU football players were receiving payment for work they were not doing at the Norman car dealership Big Red Sports and Imports. This prompts a university investigation

So, they state there are no violations - however the anonymous letter went to NCAA--story gets some steam. Suddenly, they turn themselves in?

When Stoops found out about AD driving a Lexus that he had not paid for, he told Peterson to take it back where he got it immediately.

OU investigated Big Red but the GM refused to turn over the financial records. At that point, OU barred all athletes from having a relationship with that dealership. After all the bad blood, Big Red was going out of business. The owner eventually sold to a much bigger dealership based out of OKC. The new owner made all the financial records available to OU. That is when they discovered all the payments.

My main beef in the whole deal is the discrepancy in punishment between what we received in 1994 for our violation, and what OU got for theirs. They were the same crime, but OUs was on a much larger scale and in their own back yard (whereas ours was 3 hours away in Dallas).

We got no TV and no bowl game for a year, so YES, Big Tuna, I think that is exactly what OU should have gotten (as opposed to the JOKE of a sentence you did get).

To say that OU acted on their own in investigating / self policing the matter is laughable considering the fact that they didn't really get started on it until it was revealed here.
