Their post and my reply on Hornfans:

quote:
Just because aTm likes to play soldier, it doesnt' mean they have a long military history.

Tell that to the hundreds whose names are on the monument in front of the Corps area, including several of my friends. They gave all of their tomorrows for your today.

He's very ignorant on the subject, but I honestly believe if he knew he would still trash A&M. It's nothing new from those communist p.o.s's.

Yes. Who cares what a few morons think? Stop worrying about what the sips say. They're classless and in a grumpy mood. Expect them to say things to get people riled up.

there are thousands of doctors that can cure diseases and there are machines capable of making extremely complex machines but society has not come up with a cure for stupidity or lack of common sense. Disregard the idiots and remember that you are a part of the rest of the world where common sense, reasonability, and general humanity are normal.

"The Texas Aggies"

"You say Sir he is sorta crude like,
and as country as a Hoot,
But he's Hero of this Nation
When the guns begin to shoot.
You say Sir, that it's just a joke
and only done for fun
But have you seen the record, Sir,
Of what these guys have done?
More Officers and Men, Sir,
In time of war they say
Than any other School, Sir,
Throughout the USA.
When their Country needs them
They're among the first to die
So it's kinda hard to laugh, Sir
When you've seen their families cry.
You can say they pick their nose
Can't even play a flute
But they're the heroes of this Nation
When the guns begin to shoot.
They ain't no perfumed Beatniks
With a Hair-do and a Fan
So you can call a Texas Aggie
When you really need a Man.
They don't mind your lies and jokes, Sir
When you want a little fun
They'll even join in laughing
about the things they've done.
But when the Laughing's over
And you've had your last big Hoot
Just call the Texas Aggies
When the guns begin to shoot"

This poem was written by J. Gordon Bristow of Oklahoma University, one of Texas A&M's long time rivals. He is referring to A&M's outstanding participation in American wars. In World War II, 18,000 Aggies went to fight, of these 14,000 served as officers, more than any other school, including the United States military Academy. Seven of these young men were awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest honor our Country can award. So many Aggies fought in this war that the US Army printed posters and billboards that read: "Join the Army, and help the Aggies win the War."

I have never heard that about recruiting posters before. Do you have some backup/links/references concerning this? Sorry to doubt you, but so many pseudo traditions are popping up these days (like the Patton quote) that I want to be accurate when I repeat something.

We've got so many great traditions, I hate it when people make up crap...such as the reasons for the pennies at Sully's feet.

Regarding the number of Aggies in WWII, I guess some more research has been done, because the campusology question in The Standard now reads
quote:
16. How many Aggies served in World War II?
There were 20,229 Aggies who served in World War II. Of these, 14,123 served as officers, more than any other school, including the combined totals of the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy.
Doing a very rough numbers thing, there were about 16.1 million who served in WWII, so about 0.125%, or one out of every 800 people in uniform was a Texas Aggie.

But in the officer corps, it was much higher. The Officer:Enlisted ratio was about 1:10, so you can estimate about 1.6 million officers. About 0.9% were Aggies, or one out of every 113 officers serving.

I'm curious, what made up reasons have you heard for putting pennies on Sully's boots?

Solid-

The reason given is for good luck on tests. That, I think is amusing, and kind of a fun tradition. I have no quarrel with the tradition up to that point.

However, it is a very new tradition, I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone further than about 20 years back who did that. And that's when the starts.

The campus tour guides from the MSC tell a cock-and-bull story about how Sully would give the cadets "a penny for their thoughts". And I've seen on this forum the assertion that Sully would tutor cadets for a penny.

These fairy tales add nothing to the tradition, and IMO look stupid, like we need some 100-year-old validation for everything we do.

So bottom line:

to the relatively new tradition of placing pennies. I don't mind the spontaneous generation of new traditions. That's how all the old ones started.

to making up crap to justify it, to make it somehow more sacred, and to make it look like ancient lore when it's new.

I'm not going to disrespect the sippers of the WWII generation. Many of them served, including at least 2 who were with the 3-4 Ags on the Doolittle Raid.

Counting and comparing MOH recipients like they were football championships seems a bit crass. But for the sake of accuracy, from The Standard
quote:
11. Who are the seven Texas Aggie Medal of Honor recipients?
Carswell, Fowler, Harrell, Hughes, Keathly, Leonard, and Whitely

Rebbasser: I'm afraid if you check the history, Edwards was a charlatan who couldn't tell the truth about anything, including having attended Texas A&M.

I think his assertion that he was an Aggie was accepted for a while, but his name has been pulled from the current "campos" because of the doubts.
