OK....cue the links to about a hundred other threads that have more then likely discussed this matter, but can I get an Ol' Ag (prefferably real Ol')to give me a definitive answer as to exactly when the term t-sip or teasip started and in what context. I have a few sip buddies that asked me this and I wasn't sure as to the exact origins except that different Ags believe it came from and meant different things.

I find it funny that urban dictionary has t-sip listed.

i'm not an old ag, but my dad was ('63), and he always told me it was because they were the rich kids and we were the farmers. in his words: "while we drink whiskey and work for a living, they sip their tea and spend their daddy's money". he hated texas, if you couldn't tell.

anyway, this explanation always worked for me. i'm sure it morphed into the war explanation that is soon to follow in the posts below, but i believe that this is the true origin of the term.

To best of my knowledge, since those of the Ivory tower type over in Austin would pack their wiskey into the game, they often would use a Tea or Coffee thermos to do so. When asked by the stadium guards what was inside, they would simply say, "tea."

We are beer drinking farmers. They are tea sipping fraternity boys.

Not sure if this is accurate but they were the city boys and we were the farmers. I heard they sipped tea with their little finger in the air and that was how the hook em sign started.

That's my understanding as well.

Even if someone didn't explain that to me it wouldn't have been that hard to make that connection

I heard it was when wartime came, we went and fought for our country while they stayed on their porches and sipped tea

My understanding is that it comes from the fact that our boys were off across the Pond fighting in WWII while they were back home sitting on their frat house porches sipping tea.

While we are down-to-earth people, farmers and the like, they are considered socialites, and sit around in the afternoon and sip tea.

You guys have been calling us sips and giggling about it before WWII. The notion that UT didn't send soldiers to fight in WWII is laughable.

t-sip is derived from uppity tea sipper. You must have heard of the stiff upper lip of the english people(the aristocrats/high society snobs...not the common man). Well, the t-sips had a reputation for drinking tea (like the old english aristocrats), while the hard working aggies (farmers) had to make do with whiskey. Originally they were called "those uppity tea sippers"....which slowly over many years down came to be the simple "t-sips"

Nobody said that zero t-sips went to WWII...

...however it is a matter of fact that TAMU sent more officers to WWII than the service adademies combined.

It is also a matter of record that nearly an entire class of Texas Aggies put a halt to their education to join the war effort...the class of 1945...many of them that returned from the war came back and completed their degrees. I

I had the priviledge to attend the Aggie Muster ceremony honoring their 50th reunion...absolutely amazing.

Frats have nothing to do with how the term originated. Get over it people. Why do you think they yesll "Poooor Aggies." It is a total blue collar v. white collar thing.

Well then that makes it all even.

One guy versus sending more officers to WWII than the service adademies combined.

Great point.

i talked to an old ag, class of '44 or '45 (i think he said that they graduated them ini 44, so he was probably class of '45) and he said they gave them their degrees early and sent em off to fight.

Same thing more or less with the Class of '42. They were given degrees early and sent to OCS or the WWII equivalent.

And plenty of T-sips served in the war.
OH... Sting Em!

Haha. There is no consistency in with which Ags demean Longhorns. "Arrogant, snooty, tea-sipping, rich, hippie, liberal, pot-smoking jerks."

How long do you want to ignore this user?
In its proper form, it's "tea sipper". It's been used in its diminutive, "t-sip", so much that almost nowhere does one see the original.

The term is strictly economic & refers to the sippers being rich kids who sipped tea while we rock-ribbed, hard-working Ags were out there carving our way to excellence. It does not refer to their war-time heritage, since reputation aside, they're every bit as American as we are. I know that's blasphemous, but it's a fact nevertheless

So instead of "Pads is a t-sip"

It should be "Pads is a tea sipper"

I'll get it right next time. Sorry about that Pads, you tea sipper.

i occasionally refer to them as t-sips, but it is not as applicable now as it was back in the day. the majority of A&M students today are affluent, suburban kids. the Ag college makes up maybe 10% of the student body today.

Stop buying drugs and throw away that certificate of completion from texas u.
