Fellows is my old lady and is behind me on my decision because of what has been going on. Only one of my buddies has tried to stop me from punching, one whitebelt who is not in my outfit. And one adult affilated with the Corps, not including Col. Brewer.

Is your heart really into quiting or is just that you feel you have to because of pressure?

Just a concerned outsider who cares.

BQ, I was never in the corps and honestly its a decision that I continue to regret to this day.

I don't know your situation, but I know that if I had it to do over, I would have joined the Corps.

BQ Drummer: I am a BQ '93 member of B-Battery. There was a moment during my freshman year in the Fall semester when I thought about quitting the corps. I called my mom and she told me to hang in there and that I could see it through. I am a first generation Aggie in my family, and I can't tell you how proud I am of the four years I spent in the Band.

I know that you have undoubtedly had some really tough days in which you wanted to just walk out on everything to clear your mind. I'm sure you have probably had moments when you second guessed your decision to sign up in the first place. But please always remember, that these tough days will pass. There will be a time really soon when others will look to you for guidance and encouragement. Take this time to lean on your fellow BQ fish buddies.

I lost 18 members of my freshman class but I made some deep bonds with the remaining 12 members of my class who stayed for the full 4 years. If you decide to stay in the corps, you will undoubtedly look back in a few years when you are slipping on your senior boots in the morning, asking a fish to pull your boots in the evening, and perhaps stepping off on Hullabaloo as a member of the bugle rank on Gameday and be eternally grateful that you decided to stay in the corps.

You will have the rest of your life to reflect back on your college years. I only wish that once you do make your final decision to either stay or leave, that you can look at yourself in the mirror and say that you looked deep within your own heart and made a decision that you will be happy with for the rest of your life.

The corps and the Aggie Band will always hold a special place in my heart for the rest of my life. I will always be proud that I was one of the "Noble Men of Kyle Field". I invite you to stay in the band and give yourself that chance to look back ten years from now and be glad that you served for four years in the greatest leadership laboratory in the world.

The Brave Aggie residing behind the "Burnt Orange Curtain"!!!

I spent too much time my fish year trying to talk buddies out of punching. We started with 13, and 6 of us came back for our sophomore year. None of the 7 that punched made it to their junior year at A&M.

If you're going to punch, remember, quitting gets easier the more you do it. My suggestion is grab some sack.

Gotta admit I (like almost every other fish in the history of the Corps) made the infamous phone call to Momma one bad day my fish year. Thankfully, she told me to sleep on it and reconsider the next day. Amazingly enough, the sun came up again the next day and life didn't seem so bad anymore. I put on my Charlies and went out to FDT practice.

From there, we won a National Championship, my buddies became my best friends earned the old fashioned way, I went on to love the Corps like nothing else and had the privilege of being Commander of the RVs, Corps Adjutant, serving on the Firing Squad to honor fallen Ags, etc., etc...

Bottom line is that some days your fish year can SUCK beyond words, but EVERY day builds your character if you keep giving 110% and will mold you into the soldier, statesman, and knightly gentleman we're famous for.

It's tough to have that perspective when you're getting ripped apart by a pisshead for campos, but that's why you have 130 years of history to look back on and realize lots of other cadets have had bad "circumstances" also and persevered by depending on the values the Corps teaches. Use your buddies to help you through this...that's why they're there.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
If you quit, you will spend the rest of your life explaining how you were in the Aggie Band, but quit.

One day your kids will find out. I want you to picture the look on their face when they realize their dad is a quitter.

You can always quit tomorrow. Just never quit today. Don't worry about making it until Christmas or next year. Just make it through today.

Take it from somebody who wanted to "punch" before the word was even used around the quad in 1965. I remember talking to my parents, telling them the corps was "absurd" and that everything we did was stupid and something out of the '40s. They didn't say much, but asked me to keep trying. I didn't leave, and ended up First Sergeant and C.O. of my old outfit - Animal 8, and an R.V. I still travel from California every year to meet with half a dozen or so of my fish buddies and see a game at Kyle. (Thanks for the music.)

Did my corps experience help me become a military genius, a general, or a fighter pilot? A business tycoon? A political leader? A millionaire? Hell, no. But, I did get to share a great school and a great tradition with my daughter, Class of '08, and because I didn't punch, I am a member of a great fellowship that still makes instant friends with good people where ever I go.

Seriously, you are just about through the very hardest part of your fish year - it gets better (and better.) You've had some personal problems - maybe financial and academic ones too. But, don't bail, fighter. You are right where you need to be.

Like Joeag above I was in B-Batt (though being from '92 I may have helped cause him to lose a couple of those 18 buddies he lost, but hopefully not)

Don't let go of being a Wildman. You really will regret it - at least wait until you have Christmas Break to think things through. Your buddies trully will be your lifelong brothers - stick with it and you'll see.

BQ - I would like to share my experience with you.
I left A&M (many years ago) because of a couple of incidents that happened in the Corps.
I went to another small coed school and was OK there for a few weeks but slowly began to miss Texas A&M in my deepest gut. I felt like I had screwed myself with my decision. I had been reared an Aggie from as early as I can remember. I did not know what to do. Because going back into the Corps in those days was out of the question.
Well, I sucked it up and went back to A&M with my tail between my legs, as a non-reg. My old outfit buddies saw me one day and pitched a ***** because I did not come back to the old outfit. So I did but had to be a pisshead and that 1st semester back was like All College night every day. Well, you all can imagine. Well, in all worked out and I graduated , Commissioned and have a life long
love affair with Texas A&M and the Aggies who welcomed me back and MOSTLY all who finally accepted me as a good AG.
Since, I have never quit anything the rest of my life unless I had discussed it with the important people in my life.
BQ, for God sakes man, we all make mistakes, that is being human. But, before this might become a regrettable mistake, seriously search your gut for how you really feel about being in the Fighting Texas Aggie Band. And trust your heart or if you prefer your gut. But, finally run it by the people you love the most.

Thirsty Third said it best "I still travel from California every year to meet with half a dozen or so of my fish buddies and see a game at Kyle."

Ditto on that, something most people my age (59) cannot say.

I came close my pisshead year, far away from home, grades barely hanging in and a buddie failing out asking me to go to OCS with him. I spoke with my Dad and he did not scold, just said, "If you quit when things are rough now, you will quit in life when things get even rougher and they will. Sleep on it and decide tomorrow."

I still see those guys in my outfit from my class and some from the classes above and below me. We are all as close as brothers and there is a trusting bond there that only Aggies have. Whoever is making life miserable now may likely be a friend later because they know you have "it".

Sleep on it and decide tomorrow. Find "it" within yourself. It's there if you just focus on it and let the bs slide like water off a duck's back. Focus on a change in attitude and they can't touch you bud.

I think you are the type of person who never finishes anything they started.

You are mentally weak and that's why you are quitting.

Your buddies probably can't wait to see you quit either so they can stop listening to your whinning. They probably fantasize about giving you a bag party every night.

Put yourself out of your misery and start eating chow at Sagreasa with the rest of the plain jane student body.

Just Quit Already! There are plenty of support mechanisms in the outfit, corps, and university to assist you no matter what your decision.

You were informed of these resources during FOW, so go use them. Start with your first sergeant and work up from there if you have not done so.

Another way to say it is S*it or get off the pot.

By the way, what drummer rank and file number are you?

A wise man once said this too shall pass... whatever that means. Problems have a limited life span. Life is about challenges. If you need help, let us know there is no shame. We all have difficulties. Take it one day at a time and before you know it you'll be at final review. God speed. Hang tough. Good fortune.

"If you have raced with men on foot, and they have tired you out, how can you compete with horses?" (Jer 12:5)

This is not the last hard time you will see. Don't punch and leave your mission undone. Hang in and make it a story you will tell to your son or daughter, because some day, somewhere, they will have the same temptation you have now.

Id like to say you should stay no matter what. However, i played fish for a whole year, and when my 1.46 GPR rolled around, there was too much risk. I bailed, it sucked, i wish i hadnt, but then again, i have a diploma hanging on my wall as a direct result and a wife i met through my new roommate.

Its all about decisions, some of them are hard, and unfortunately, you won't know it was/wasn't the right decisions until later on. Use your judgement, take it all in, and do what you gotta do.

If it were a choice between high grades and the Corps, I would take the GPA every time. Usually it isn't such a choice though. It is easy to find new ways to waste your time.
BrazosDog02
How long do you want to ignore this user?
This is true. Also, i have no idea why you are punching. Just make sure you set your priority when you do. Once you get out and realize that you dont have to wake up at 5:45, go to formation, drill, don't have to be back at 4pm for a party, etc...its really easy to screw up.

You may get depressed because all your firends in the corps turned out to not be freinds after all, and youll probably feel like a quitter, but its a risk youll have to take and only you will know if its a risk worth taking.

BS excuse plan and simple. My class is proof of that. E-1 '99 was extremely active in the Corps and University as a whole and the guys who walked final review are now doctors, computer engineers, graduates of Harvard Business school, captains in the Army, public accounting managers, etc, etc, etc.

The guys from my class who punched to "go make grades" later failed out to a man.

He has made up his mind. Let him go. The hardship for him will start the day he walks away, and forevermore has to say, "Yes, but I quit." when Ags ask him if he was in the Corps.
