...a player slips on the turf and it's called "self-takle-ization."

Actually....I rather like that made-up word!

;-)

quote:
Matriculate
Sportscaster - "He has the ability to just matriculate down the field."

I believe this came from Hank Stram in an NFL Films show from waaaaay back.

quote:
Discombobulated

You know this is a real word right?

"...To throw into a state of confusion"

Couple of real words in which announcers invent extra syllables.

soph-O-more. The middle O isn't pronounced Einstein.

ath-UH-lete. Extra syllable used by high school coaches.

Combining the two, "He is very athUHletic sophOmore quarterback". Yuck.

quote:
"Untracked"

As in - "he can't get untracked and get going"

You would think "On track" is the right phrasing, but maybe I don't understand the word.
This one irritates me the most. The correct phrase is "on track." As in:

"He can't get on track and get going."

The player is currently "untracked", (i.e., like a train being off a track) and needs to get back on the track in order to make progress. We definitely don't want the J-Train "untracked"!

Cessna gets this wrong all the time; you'd think that his editor would know better. I suppose that some people who use "untracked" really mean to say "can't get out of the rut they're stuck in", but being stuck in a rut is a totally different idiom.

untracked:

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=untracked

2. Informal. achieving a superior level of performance after a slow start: The team suddenly got untracked and began to score.

Another interesting article on the use of "untracked"

http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archives/002148.html

It's been in use for decades, but I agree that it's a mutilation of "on track"...

The new tarded phrase is ...."in space".....as in "He is great in space", or "Once in space, he is special"

Hell, I am taking up space right now, in space, and you probably dont wanna smell my special space.

What does "great in space" supposed to mean anyway?

Unless one is anti-matter, or a black hole, we are all in space, just like this thread.

"Double reverse" when there is only a single reverse. Gregg Easterbrook called that one awhile back. He still references it.

** not a sportscaster, but worthy **

Emmitt Smith threw out something along the line of "skeptable" during his press conference held at D/FW right after he was drafted by the boyz.

The Language Log article is interesting. I didn't know there were examples of usage so far back. Still, as the article notes, it's based on the "stuck in a rut" idiom and assumes that all teams start off in a state of "discombobulation". To be fair, maybe that does describe this year's Aggie team pretty well.

curleeaggie06 sez:

"Anything Lou Holtz says.
period."

Such as; "I award this sticker to Joe Blow of the University of Clemson."

Another poster commented on the use of the non-word "irregardless." It's a convoluted combination of the perfectly good words "irrespective" and "regardless."

As best I can tell it reflects the user's ignorance of proper English with his equal and opposite faux sense of sophistication he belies it conveys

Another favorite is the use of "myself" favored by athletes at all levels who believe that it absolves them from the correct use of "I" and "me." As in "If he'd only throw the ball to myself, I'd catch it."

I posted these two on another thread, but..

I hate it when they use defense as a verb, as in "How will they defence it"

And, "Hook and ladder" instead of "hook and lateral."

Seems I remember Pam Ward describing one of our touchdowns in the '01 A&M-Wyoming game with the term "skooched"...as in "he skooched in for a touchdown".

Awful.

I just hate how announcers use the word "football" three times per sentence. "He's a good football player," He's a good football coach," and so forth.

If they had just said "He's a good coach" - what I have thought basketball coach?

I don't care for the phrase "it's a game of inches".

All teams should be able to convert inches so it's really inconsequential.

Players having "extra gears" is mildly annoying. Just say they are faster than everybody else on the field or quicker.
