Gig'em will never be replaced by horns down

I'm afraid it already has. Whenever we play tu on T+1, no matter where you look if a camera if on an Aggie (and we happen to be doing well) you will without fail get the horns down.

No big deal I suppose, since we gripe about everything else. However, it is a loss of our own symbol in favor of an inferior one. There did exist a time when we gave a gig'em no matter who we played.

I do not remember seeing anything other than a Gig'um, but I do remember Pinky. I whipped out to him on campus in '65. Now that was an experience.

General and President Earl Rudder always used the Gig'um. So did Gene Stallings. And so did a lot of my Aggie buddies who are no longer around. Butch Baldridge, Tom Hester.

I am to old to change.

Is it okay to have a sawem off sticker while also having two a&m stickers?

I completely agree with this thread.

I think part of it is that younger Ags dont appreciate Gig 'em as a hand sign. What I mean is that a lot of them are used to seeing hook 'em EVERYWHERE and and seeing it used a lot by non horns.

We on the other hand, dont use Gig em a lot, except for the Gig 'em yell. We dont hold it up during the alma matter, our players never flash gig 'em after a touch down or a home run. Beause of this, Gig 'em is being forgotten as a hand sign of Texas A&M. Our students dont wildly flash gig em after a score either (I do).

Hell, most non Ags have no clue what the hell that thumb thing on Texas A&M merchandise is. And when many students get here they have little or no knowledge of or appreciation for their own hand sign and would rather use a tired cliche hand sign than the original Aggie made handsign.

If we work to bring the gig 'em hand sign back into the public eye by encouraging students and athletes to use our hand sign and not horns down, then peopl;e will learn to associate thumbs up as "gig em" and not just "OK".

Balrog,

Is that suppsed to be cougar high's hand sign?
As the only conference with hand signs, in my Ol' Ag day you had to know all the other schools' signs....I don't think the hogs had a sign though.

oh yeah, and you's blend...

Kind of makes you wonder what Fish camp and T-camp are for. huh? I transeferred from Blinn, but know more about the University than many, just because of the love I have had for as long as I can remember.

I think it is the younger kids now days, they choose to come to the school b/c their friends or girlfriends are here or their just closer to home. They really don't care about the traditions and what makes this school unique. I've been here since 2000 and it's been in a transition to "just another Texas school" as far as I can tell.

Can't tell you the last time I had a core turd say Howdy! to me when I was walking alone on campus(probably about 3 years.) Not that I really liked that anyway, but still miss it. The unique-ness is just slowly disappearing and it's up to the recruiters and everyone on campus to keep it alive. "Keepers of the spirit" need to do that instead of just finding an easy way in to A&M.

I agree w/ what Objective Texas fan said about the upside down horns, keep the Gig'em going and let's stay original.

brittlloyd - Not saying howdy is nothing new... it was rare to hear when I was on campus in '96-'00.

One of our hand sign's downfalls is that it is so generic - a thumbs up sign is universal and not necessarily distinctive to A&M (yes, I know we were the first school to use a hand sign dating back to the TCU game in Fort Worth in '30). I'd dare say that most folks outside of Texas don't see the the Gig 'em sign as anything other than the literal "thumbs up".

That said, I'm not ashamed of the Gig 'em hand sign, but I'm also not ashamed that students do a horns down when we play them. I think people are taking this further than is warranted.

How is the t.u. fight song anti-A&M?

Stick with the Gig'em

I believe A&M is STILL a unique school, we may not be as Red Ass as back in the 40's or whatever.

Texas A&M is still the most tradition rich school with the most school pride i have ever heard of.

Be an Aggie, not a hater of tu. Stick with the Gig'Em and leave the horns down deal with the mullet-heads up north.

As a previous poster stated...Our fight song is all about the horns. At fish camp, they teach that if you're an Aggie, you automatically hate tu.

If change is what you're after, start with the War Hymn. Since I was very young, I've always thought it was a little ridiculous to sing about another school when we're not even playing them.

War Hymn, horns down. What's the difference?

Leave the horns down for the OU trailer park residents. Aggies give horn fans plenty of ammunition for obsession talk already. The day Texas A&M becomes more interested in what TEXAS A&M is doing, and less obsessed...err concerned about that school in Austin, the better off we will be.

I am genetically incapable of making my fingers do that. Up, down, whatever. Makes no difference, my fingers don't do that. Ever.

Note. Even during eight years of coaching youth baseball, my teams used a "peace sign" to signify two outs.

If we're playing the 'sips, either is appropriate, in my humble opinion. If we're not playing them, then the thumbs up is appropriate, and the horns down is not.

I denigrate the teasips every chance I get. I may be less disparaging of other schools in the conference/state (or both), but I will rarely (if ever) speak positively of the 'whorns.

Younger than that. My nephew attended A&M in the early 90's and has a five year old son and 2 1/2 year old daughter. I've never said a word to them about the Longhorns, but whenever they come over to my house they start doing the Horns down, turning my Longhorn coasters upside down and putting things over my Texas oriented pictures and magazines. I just look at them and think "They've both got another 35 years of doing this before they'll get bored. Amazing."

the problem is every damn person in the world stole the thumbs up and uses it in everyday situations to mean "good." I think we need to shake it like we do in the gig em yell in every instance in order to keep it distinguished from the common man's thumbs up.

I kinda went off on a tangent with the saw'em off stuff. I just get so angry with horns down and saw'em off I didn't focus on the fact the thread was simply about the horns down. If I had to pick what ticks me off the most it would be the generic saw'em off merchandise, however. The horns down is usually only shown at sporting events and the person doing it might just have a pro-Aggie shirt on. If someone was wearing a saw'em off or a "Mess With Texas" shirt and did the horns down, I'd be in favor of swift kick in the arse for them.

Horns down is dumb. Support your own team, and do it in a classy and positive manner that doesn't demean the traditions of another institution. It isn't that hard a thing to follow really.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
The horns down only supports the myth that Aggies are obsessed with Longhorns.

If one wants to see true obsession, Orangebloods is filled with threads on A&M. It's comical that THEY speak of our obsession.

(Note that I realize I was going to THEIR site, and thus furthering THEIR argument, but the fact still remains their sites are filled with comments about us)

"what i hate is those idiots on campus in the jacked up 4x4s with HUGE horns down stickers on the back window. good god, that looks horrible."

AMEN, AMEN, AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i hate t.u more than anyone, but this stupid "saw 'em off" sticker does more to advertise and support t.u. than anything else. it is so high school. most think it is there to run down t.u. thats ok during the week of the game, but come on folks support TEXAS A&M, put and AGGIE sticker on your car.
