Here's a picture of the injury, ouch. They blew this up to cover an entire page in the Aggieland that year.

The Aggies were playing a lackluster game at Kyle against Arkansas State where we trailed through the first three quarters. Sept. 29th, 1984. On the final play of the third quarter, Kevin ran the ball to the Old Ag sideline going towards the horseshoe. When he got to the sideline he dove (either for a first down or maybe he was trying to stretch for the TD, can't remember) and was pushed out at the 5, but came down out of bounds like this.

The band started up the War Hymn for the change in quarters but then stopped midway through once people started realizing that Kevin was hurt (maybe this was the beginning of what seems to be one of the great Texags controversies... since everyone was off the wood for the song, possibly it somehow morphed into being off the wood for the injury).

Kevin was out for the game/season and Stump came in and threw a 5 yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Teal (his second TD of the game). That was the first time we led in the game, 22-21, and that was also it for the scoring, so that was the final.

So was that that same game where Alan Smith broke the Aggie record for field goals in a game with 5? I thought that game was not the Kevin Murray ankle injury game.

Alan Smith set the record (6) the previous year, '83, against Arkansas St. in a 38-17 win.

As noted above, we beat Arkansas State 22-21 the year Murray was injured. Not sure how many FG were in that game.
