My first game was a Baylor game at Kyle in the early 90's. My Dad and I had great seats directly across from the student side on the 50 yard line. We had been to Rice and UH games but my Dad kept saying "I want you to see a REAL college game. This is nothing." Well Kyle was what he was looking for to show me what college ball is all about. A coaches wife got the hook in my mouth. She explained all of the yells to me and taught me to "saw varsity's horns off." I then quickly taught my Dad, a UCLA alumni.
It was a student that set the hook. After the game this Baylor fan was smoking and he tossed his cigarette butt on the sidewalk right by the MSC. The student walking behind him stopped and bent over, he picked up the cigarette and pinched the cherry off and threw the butt away in a trash can. I was standing there for whatever reason and he saw me watch him do this. He walked right up to me, patted me on the head, and said "This is OUR campus buddy, we gotta keep it clean."
That weekend my Dad had to explain to me, on the drive back to Sugar Land, what honor is. I will never forget that conversation and I will never forget why he had to explain it to me then.
A little over a decade later I picked up a cigarette from an opposing fan and did the exact same thing but couldn't find a kid watching to make that same impression on him. Kids today, he probably would have laughed at me anyway...
That is why there would never be "Drag rats" in College Station. That campus is a reflection on us on so many levels. Our university, unlike almost every other school in the country, is part of what defines us. It did not just effect us when it comes to education, in fact that might have been the least important of the great things I learned in College Station, Texas.
