"What do I need to with this team to make it better? I mean, you can ask that same question and get the same kind of answer in half the places in the United States today that didn't win last Saturday and that's what we have to go through and deal with."

- Coach Fran, Tuesday Media Conference

I'd like to see him succeed, but let's avoid these "half the teams lose every Saturday" renditions.

What kind of answer would you get in the other half of the places in the United States that didn't win?

Oh no!!!

The "Half the teams in college football lost today" speech!!!

I thought we canned R.C. for crap like that.

so does that mean we concede to being somewhere in the bottom half? do we deserve to be ranked in the top 60?

"Half the teams lose every Saturday."
The 12th Man Foundation pays the coach a national top ten % salary to make sure the A&M team isn't in the bottom half of that analogy.
That excuse is a lame cop out. How about a salary refund?
All football coaches should be on commission like sales reps. Give 'em a good base and then all or nothing commission for wins/losses if they want to be a millionaire.

That's right gmf_aggie,

My Grand Dad was a huge college football fan and he used to say "On any given Saturday any team can win in college football".

All the problems have been addressed in the forrest. He'll turn it around. Nothing to be alarmed about. Everyone relax. Fran'll gitter dun.

I don't give a crap what he says. No explanation can make me feel better about A&M getting their ass kicked by CU. I am hoping Fran is devoting most of his brain power on improving the team's performance and very little brain power on polishing his quotes to the media.

I'm not about to defend Fran's job performance the first half of this season, but why is everyone misreading this quote as "half the teams lose every Saturday"?

He says that you would get the same answer from "half the teams that lost Saturday" meaning of the teams that lost half of them would give the same answer. It doesn't even come close to "half the teams lose every Saturday".

He is basically saying that after a game like Colorado, you'd hear similar things from a lot of programs. He basically was sparing everyone the annoyance of some generic coach speak. It's not really an answer or what I would like to hear, though.

Fran & Co. has definitely done some major spinning over the last few weeks, but there's no need to put words in his mouth.

EDIT: And even if he really meant you'd get the same answer from the half that lost (as opposed to the half that won), he isn't using it as an excuse for a loss.

Look for this this question in the middle:

Any reason to believe that for whatever reason there's some disconnect between what coaches are coaching and what the players are picking up and taking to the field?

Context matters. Here's the full question and full answer:
quote:
Any reason to believe that for whatever reason there's some disconnect between what coaches are coaching and what the players are picking up and taking to the field?

"Any time you don't play well there's going to be some disconnect there. And that's our job to reevaluate and say "Are we doing too much? Do we need to do less.? Do we need to do this? Do we need to do that? That's what we constantly do. You constantly look at yourself first and see what could I have done better. What do I need to with this team to make it better? I mean, you can ask that same question and get the same kind of answer in half the places in the United States today that didn't win last Saturday and that's what we have to go through and deal with."

I wasn't reading that as a "half the NCAA teams lose every week."

Maybe I suck at basic reading comprehension but to me, it says that half of the teams THAT lost will probably be answering questions about disconnect between coaches/players.

I think the "half" was a figure of speech (i.e. "half the people on this message board are friggin' morons".
