Excuse my footbal ignorance.

What is the difference between NT and DT?

4-3 vs. 3-4.

There's more to it than that.

I think I get the idea. Thanks.

A Nose Tackle will normally play as a head-up "noseguard", a nose-shade, 1 technique, or a 2 technique. A Defensive Tackle plays the other techniques such as a 2, 3, 4, 4i, or 5.

For the curious can you explain those a little more. I know the difference between an NT and DT bue I nver played football, so most of that last post was gibberish.

If the Ags run a 4-3 spread shifted to the strong side, then the DT will line up on the outside shoulder of the guard on the strong (tight end) side. The NT will line up on the center's shoulder away fromt he strong side.

The biggest difference is a nose guard basically is there to plug up the middle. They are normally very big and strong and just bull rush. A DT will plays gap control and are more free to go and make plays. they play away from the center and the nt plays over the center.

I think that description applies to all positions except placekicker.

Then it just depends. Linebackers make the strength call. In my high school, we called strong left because most offenses are "right handed"

0 tech - head up center
1 tech - shaded on left or right of center
2 tech - inside of G
3 tech - inbetween G and T
4i - shaded on tackle
4 tech - head up tackle
5 tech - in between tackle and TE
Those are the "techniques" that he's talking about

The 0 and 1 is usually called a shade or head up. Which is where a NT would traditionally play. NGs are usually the guys that are 300+ and EXTREMELY strong, they consistantly take on double teams and are usually not huge playmakers, but they serve a crucial role in blocking the middle of the line.

Simple explination guys, a Nose Guard plays over Center. A Defensive Tackle plays over Offensive Guards or Tackles, regardless if it's a 3-4 or a 4-3.

That's the difference in the terminology, not the gap alignment or defensive set.

Wow. Whether I understand all that or not, I now see that there is a marked difference in the two and have a basic understanding. Thanks.
