I'm sure this has already been discussed to death, but does anyone know for certain whether or not the names will make it back on the football jerseys this year?

...or you could just memorize the numbers.

I'm still trying to figure out how these eagle eyed folks read their names from the stands.

One of the great Aggie traditions LOST is the practice and requirement for memorizing the names and numbers of the players. Stupid "traditions" like holy Kyle Field grass have replaced it. In the '50's and '60's, and probably for fifty years before that every Corps member had to memorize the starting lineups on both sides of the ball with their names, numbers, and home towns. So, those of us who learned to do that, even though we are now in our 60's still do it. We don't need names on Jersey's. I say leave them off until a really big game comes along, like playing t.u. when we are both highly ranked, or a BCS against a real university, or maybe even the national championship game.

Not having (or having) names on the back of jerseys has nothing to with how well a team plays. The Patriots have names on the back of their Jerseys -- USC doesn't. LSU does, OU does -- really it doesn't matter one bit.

Stup,
Maybe so, but I've never understood how you could watch a game through binoculars. I still say if it's so important for you to know everybody that makes a play then you would take a look at a roster or at least carry one with you.

77,
I'll agree that there is no significance to the act itself. It is the meaning that a coach attaches to it and whether or not the team buys into the meaning the coach gives it. I think that our guys did and would say that got us into a better mind set. It gave them a physical manifestation of the manner in which they should thinking. It was a symbol. Symbols can have a lot of power. That is undeniable.

Leave em off, I like the old school look, and there should mandatory maroon pants at all games

Wow. You just started a whole new offseason s*** storm with the pants thing. Hang on cause this could get rough.

I say put them back on. We can still have team unity with the names on the back.

Leave them off and take the name off of the front as well.

I don't think you will ever see them return under this regime. Fran stated the names would return last season when the time was right. Guess the time was never right. Makes me appreciate more teams that can win and do it with the burden of player names on their backs. Anyway, it's a package deal.

And gig 'em.

It may be easy for the hardcore fans here to memorize the numbers, but I'm willing to bet that the average A&M fan, the casual TV viewing college football fan, and the media don't have the numbers memorized. Whenever I'm watching a game it's always easier to tell what's going on whenever a team has their name on their jersey oppposed to watching a team like ND or USC who doesn't.

It was the same for us at USNA. As Plebes we had to know the names, numbers, positions, and home towns of all of our players. We also had to know ... and sing ... our opponents' fight songs.

We didn't and we still don't need no steenkin' names on the jerseys.

Gig 'Em, Aggies !!

Why don't we take the numbers off as well? Then we can have a bunch of maroon jerseys making big plays and it will greatly enhance team unity!

Play for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back.

It's silly to ***** about this. Print a roster out off your computer or drop the 5 bones for a program. It's not like you're not willing to spend money on the team, assuming you're paying for your tickets.

There is also a jumbotron, in case you haven't noticed. You get to watch replays if you need to.

Leave them off. If the lazy Ags don't like, let them put-out, and get a program or memorize them. Come on guys, don't ya'll remember being fish? No worse than having to learn your Campos when you were in the Corps. Print them off before you leave for the game and study them on the way.

They are going to take the A&M off of the front and replace it with a T-Star.

Give Byrne another 3-4 years and A&M will no longer exist. He removed it from the endzones and A&M has already disappeared completely from the basketball program.

I am aware of the history of the T-Star and Texas Aggies. Texas A&M is on the verge of disappearing from the face everything in Aggie athletics.

I attended Texas A&M University.

Why would you want to remove TEXAS A&M out of the endzone? What purpose would that serve?

Keep em' off. Putting them back on is bad luck. Plus I dont think they played like a team the entire season, for the most part they did though.

I believe that "A&M" has already disappeared from the endzones. Didn't they say "Texas Aggies" this year?

Leave the names off the back, and wipe that high-school looking "Texas A&M" off the front, too. I prefer the pro-style unis we had in the mid 80s.
The biggest programs don't need their names on the front for people to look at the helment emblem and know who they are.

Don't gripe about the lack of A&M. We WANTED the end zones to say Texas Aggies. Byrne did that in response to fan pressure, and I think it was a good move on his part. I also love the T-star, and the more places it shows up the better.

Byrne's no fool when it comes to branding. He's not going to remove A&M and get us confused with Texas.

We had to learn that info in the 70's as well. My fish circa fall of '76, had to learn it. Lots of cush was lost that season for not knowing it.

You also had to know the schedule of the games as well.

I am in favor of no names on jersey's. There is so much individualism in sports that it makes me want puke. The team concept is nice. Puting names with numbers is pretty easy. Worst case, print out a roster and bring it to the game.

the endzones also read Texas Aggies back when wally was around for a few years. I like the look of Texas Aggies better, the tstar also looks good in the bball atmosphere. i really dont like the tix prices going up so much, but everything else is really positive surrounding byrne in my opinion.

I like what Reggie said, when asked this question last year. I don't remember the exact quote, but it was something like, "If you make plays, people will know who you are... even without your name on your jersey."

If indeed you do know your Aggie history, then why the *****ing? The T-star and Texas Aggies were ingrained in Aggie history long before you were thought about being born. Aggie history didn't begin when you stepped on campus.
