I watched the last 10 minutes of this tonight and have several random observations:

1. The officials were terrible. They missed the OU punter catching the snap with his knee on the ground with about 4 minutes to go. Cost Texas about 40 yards. Then they ruled a Texas receiver (Dodge I think) out of bounds when he was pretty clearly in. A few plays later they missed a PI call on OU in the end zone, but on the same play another OU player intercepts the ball but they rule him out of bounds. He was clearly in bounds.

2. Barry Switzer is wearing a crimson hat that doesn't say anything about OU, but says "Beat Texas."

3. Kevin Nelson, who was a year behind me in high school was a freshman tailback for tu. I had forgotten that.

4. I had also forgotten that tu was ranked #1 in 1984.

5. I enjoyed rooting for tu as I watched tonight, having not remembered the outcome of this game (15-15 tie), but knowing that we would beat their *ss in Austin 37 -12 in November.

6. It's amazing how much one can forget over 20 years, while still remembering pretty much every detail of our 37-12 win in Austin that year.

Saw it too.

Agree, those were some bad calls.

Also, noticed the sips had stripes on their pants back then.

I missed the stripes on the pants. But I really got a kick out of Swtizer's "Beat Texas" hat. I can't imagine a head coach wearing a hat like that today.

I'll never forget that one either. We were up 30-0 in the 4th and I STILL expected the sips would come back.

A bunch of old-time UT fans think that was the game that sent the Horns on a near 15-year downward spiral. They have not been ranked #1 since and they went on that year to suffer some bad losses...including to a then mediocre A&M team and then an absolute throttling by Iowa in the now defunct Freedom Bowl.

The Aggies rolled of wins in 10 of the next 11 games vs. UT. Thankfully for the Horns, OU wasn't much better in those years or they really would have been in bad shape in Austin. Despite UT's 1990 SWC title run (which ended with Miami just destroying UT in the Cotton Bowl), the Horns didn't really field a strong team again until coachmackbrown arrived for the 1998 season. Sure, the '96 team won the Big XII, but they were 8-5 overall...not exactly what you would consider "strong."

For those on this board that like to make fun at coachmackbrown, all you have to do is look back at UT football from mid-'84 through the end of the '97 season to see what a turnaround he's done for the Horns. They weren't in a position like A&M had at the end of RC's career. They had gone 10, 12 or even 15 years without being considered among the nation's (much less the SWC's) elite.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

Luke:

The game was not the turning point, it was the awful recruiting by Akers vs. Switzer and later to Sherrill. That game simply started a trend that exposed us to be a mediocre to bad team.

Within 2 years, other than Hager and Metcalf, we had no talent. Heck in 1988, Shannon Kelly was our starting QB--only claim to fame is that he married Mary Lou Retton. Most of you don't remember him and there is a reason for that--he SUCKED!
