Poindexter....Billy Cannon, Jr. was my next door neighbor when I was going to grad school. He had come back to finish his degree. We duck hunted and fished together a lot and our wifes became pretty good friends. I hadn't talked to him for a long time and was shocked when I read an article in the Houston Chronicle about his dad and the article stated Billy Jr. had passed away.

Wasn't there a LB in the late 70's named Monk. He was a great student in the CE dept as well. Can not remember his 1st name.

either there are a bunch of newbees on this thread or the thread has deteriorated into a name the starter everyone would know, because there are only a handful mentioned that I don't know.

Carl Grulich and Eddie Heath (1975-78). Both went with me to high school at Richardson Pearce!

Grulich (#19) was a badass safety. Probably best remembered for his hit on tech QB Rodney Allison that put him out for the season.

Billy Cannon, Jr is dead??? How did that happen?

Man, I remember seeing him catch a pass as a true freshman in 1979 I think. My dad was so fired up we got him. He was drafted by the Yankees but his contract was voided by Bowie Kuhn because of tampering. He switched to linebacker later and became a stud.

For forgotten starters, I'll throw out Hunter Goodwin. His dad played at UT. He went to Texas A&I, made all Southland conference. Then transferred here to walk-on. Earned a starting job and made all-conference here as well. Then played 8 NFL seasons with the Vikes and the Dolphins. A really good aggie and a great guy.

That's what I read in the Houston Chronicle article about his dad. It was kind of strange because I had an old phone number for him and was trying to reach him. A couple of weeks later I read the article. Talk about total shock. Not sure how it happened.

The hit on Jerome Bettis you are thinking of, was by Patrick Bates from his safety position. Hit him square up and Bettis stumbled to the ground and Bates just stood there, and in true Bettis fashion he jumps up and gets in Bates' face. Still made the touchdown, but man it was a nice hit by someone giving up about 50lbs.
