Each weekend I watch the OC of teams like Northwestern and South Carolina implement formations and schemes to confuse the defense and put players in favorable matchups. Painful. Holman Wiggins is indeed the problem on offense.

Briles is the most interesting because he took an average QB and made it work. He would come to College Station in a heartbeat.

The question is Wiggins an Elko or Alberts decision

Briles makes $2 million annually as OC and QB coach, in the first year of a three year deal. The way he effectively uses up tempo and appears to make things easy for his QB is noticeable. Did we even talk to him?

Didnt have to. We had the guy that Elko said was the most ready coach in america to be an offensive coordinator, and the QB that gives us the best chance to win.

We good.

It appears that no OC can pry Elko's lips off of Reed's @ss, so it really makes no difference. Just pay attention to how many open receivers we have had that Reed missed.

They both better realize the dire situation we have and be ruthless.

Kendall Briles sounds like a great choice. Upping his salary to $3 million to recruit him would be chicken feed compared to the alternative of replacing the HC.

Elko doesn't want anyone on the staff that he might feel inferior to, he has shown himself to be incredibly thin skinned and self conscious

I would really like to see what Wiggins is capable of if he had a competent, consistent QB to work with.

I think we should've hired an experienced OC instead of Wiggins, but I don't think he's the disaster some folks are claiming he is. If we didn't have KC Concepcion on the roster last year, I think Klein would've looked about the same as Wiggins has this year.

Here's how I see the "allocation of blame". Plenty to go around .

QB1: 40% - unreliable accuracy & too many INTs
OC: 30% - not running enough and moving pocket
OL: 15% - too many penalties and not SEC physical
WR: 15% - too many drops and inconsistent effort

100% on Elko

Back to OP, I get frustrated with what i think i see our offense do. Our formations seem to make it easy for the defense because we do not force them to defend the whole field. We are all bunched up tight, and voluntarily narrow the field.
Maddening!

By pedigree, you referring to Cignetti start of a tree?

Because he's got no relation to the Shanahans of the NFL

I agree to an extent. Just look at the stretch of the Bama game where Marcel actually made the easy throws. We moved the ball well and scored. Unfortunately, the refs saw fit to call a holding penalty on us every time we got in the red zone so it wasn't as successful as it should have been and the goal to go play calling always seems to suck.

But the bottom line is that the Wiggins offense isn't nearly as bad as it seems IF Marcel could consistently make the easy throws. But he can't so the offense sucks.

We have zero% chance of getting Briles. After what he has done this year fixing Sellers he will get a head coaching job real soon. If his name wasn't Briles he might have got the Baylor job.

No doubt, Reed overall suxs and is very limited. But this is more on Wiggins. Coach simply doesn't have the experience to put more bandaid on Reed. Other coaches do it....they just aren't part of Elkos staff.

COMPLETE overall is what Elko is looking at.

100% Elko

but I think considering just how bad Marcel has played he's closer to 60% of the issue, certainly precipitates from his play.

OC play calling isn't bad, but yes he is inexperienced and the players are not being coached well enough to execute

WR issue is mostly not living up to their potential and this says more about Wiggins than Marcel's play. As a WR coach, our OC should be showing success with the WR room. So I like wiggins plays calls, but we are missing the mark on coaching WR (a nearly every position on Offense)

OL pass protection is good enough to have success but I agree they struggle to establish the run. Lack of run game is more of an issue than pass protection and it's not just on OL (our best RB shouldn't be a freshman)

QB play is the worst we've seen in 30 years, back when we could still win with **** QB play. Marcel needs to win 3/4 remaining games to avoid a 6-6 Branndon Stewart level season. Even then, Stewart's contemporaries were also not great, and Slocum was smart enough to bench him for a game, so given how bad Marcel is compared to other SEC QBs, and Elko's refusal to bench him caused this

it comes back to Elko

Probably because Briles wanted to actually run an offense. Bobby P. just wanted to get back to a P5 program, probably would have scrubbed the toilets if that's what it took.

The problem is that everything is being done to make things easy for Reed instead of just cutting our losses. You can't shake things up or complicate them for a defense if your QB is barely keeping up with the offense you have. It's also much harder when he's completely unreliable and you don't know if he's going to 2/3 of his passes or less than 1/2 or when he's going to throw the ball to the wrong team. AFAIC the jury is out on Wiggins because there is only so much you can do with what he has.

A lot of our issues start with Reed, and the more I think about it, the more I think last year might have hurt more than it helped. It was great, but that team covered for his inconsistency and lack of ability all the way up until the end. He was not the right guy last year, but it's hard to argue against a winning record. He was not great, but he made throws when it absolutely mattered to save himself against ND and SC. That bit us against tu and Miami when he didn't do that. Now it's mauling us to death this year. Plenty of people, especially here, would've flipped **** if a QB who went 11-2 was benched for a transfer, and like Elko said, it's going to be impossible to get a great transfer to come in for maybe a shot at starting. You'd have to make that decision and all the promises to get a top flight QB, and it would be suicide to do that in the spring after a playoff run. There's no telling what the locker room or donor dynamics would be like, but I doubt they'd be good.

How is the WR issue Wiggins fault? If Marcel can't get them the ball, what are they supposed to do? Marcel would make Larry Fitzgerald and Randy Moss look like beavis and butthead.

As far as OC calling, again there's no way to say they're not being coached well enough to execute. They executed great for two series against Alabama when Marcel decided he wanted to finally play. It all comes back to the primary decision maker on the field being absolutely terrible and the primary decision maker off the field not making a change.

Unpopular opinion, but Wiggins is the biggest problem. You have a quarterback whose career numbers make it clear that his best shot of completing passes is out of the play action. Yet we don't run the ball nearly enough, and the amount of PA passing we have done has been minimal compared to last season. Go back to the Alabama film and look at the plays where Marcel was cooking. For a minute it looked like Wiggins had finally gotten the memo, but then he went back to his awful ways.

And our short yardage play calling is some of the worst and most poorly-conceived that I've ever seen. First, we almost always sub out players which gives the defense the chance to do the same to match personnel and delays our ability to snap the ball before they're set; then we try to run for 1 yard out of the shotgun up the middle in an obvious running play, and rarely even get back to the line of scrimmage.

The guy stinks as a play caller and doesn't know how to scheme his offense in order to get the best out of his players. Marcel hasn't regressed so much as he's not being put into position to succeed. I'm not saying that he's a world-beater at QB, but Klein understood these things and built an offensive system that took them into consideration.

They guy can't complete a 5 yard pass to a wide open receiver. There's no scheme where that is successful.

Wiggins won't be in the OC position next season unless there is a night/day change in back half of the season. If Elko gets in the way, AD will make it clear that if he doesn't make the change...the change won't stop with Wiggins.

The other issue with Marcel is, even if he could make the throws, he bails out of the pocket BACKWARDS as soon as pressure gets within 5 yards of him. This doesn't allow pass routes to develop and with his back turned doesn't allow any means to find someone while scrambling. It just makes him totally useless.
