The whole OC hire is what really got him. That needs to be corrected.

None of this happens if you hire a competent OC.
Nope. None of this happens if Reed were an average QB.

I'll give Elko credit with Duke. They were 2-9 and 3-9 the 2 seasons prior to him arriving there. He turned them around and got them a bowl win in both seasons.
Bowls mean nothing
Depends on the school. Duke had won 3 bowl games since 1960 before Elko. If Elko had Duke in the CFP he'd be at Alabama right now
More than half the teams that play college football go to bowls. They're utterly meaningless now and have been for 25 years at least.
They used to be actually meaningful.
There was a point in time that if you were in the Big 10 and didn't make the Rose Bowl, you didn't go to a bowl game. There's a reason schools listed bowl appearances so prominently at one point.
Doesn't mean a thing now.
That was a LONG time ago. 1974 was the last year that "system" was in place. (Idiotic to say the least).
It was also a tremendous outlier. There WERE, obviously, fewer bowls then -- 11 to be exact in 1974. But Miami of Ohio, of all teams, played Georgia in the Tangerine Bowl -- and BEAT them!!
3 SWC teams (Baylor, t.u., and tech) and a 4th soon to be SWC team (Cougar High) played in bowl games that year. The SEC had 7. I agree that bowls are now meaningless and have been for at least the time period you mention (I would argue longer). However, I don't agree that they were that prominent back then -- at least not the minor ones. No one even knows that tech played Vandy to a tie in the Peach Bowl that year (nor do they care).

OC receiving OJT at this level is questionable at best, but with 2026 Reed somewhat hard to judge. I think the biggest issue / question is what offense are we running? An OC is supposed to have an offense, his offense. Wiggins was a lifetime position coach, doubt he has "his" offense. Regardless……
The TEAM is not bad, the D is good enough, the OL is good enough (though average at best), the skill position players are good enough, there is only one position that is not good enough, and that is QB.
With better QB play to just a marginal acceptable level we are 5-3.
This will be corrected in the off-season. Still a huge mistake by Elko to not have any viable option behind Reed (he could get injured) to plug in to get more production from the position with Reed struggling so bad in multiple games.
I expect wholesale changes on offense both staff and players, players focused on QB and OL.
Defense is fine and improving with some young guys developing.

Defense is most certainly not "fine".
They were more to blame for the loss at Bama than Marcel and as was.
Hell, I think I probably could have gotten open against our secondary.

That's nothing more than a platitude.
If you watched that game you know damn well the defense, especially the secondary, was getting absolutely abused.

With Duke's facilities and NIL bankroll he should have been undefeated!
I expected an organized coach who wouldn't recruit uncontrollable hood rats, would have great support staff, and win.

Yeah they were. But they still did enough to win. The other teams don't get points for yards. They get points for getting into the endzone. I don't care if we give up 1000 yards of offense as long as they don't get in.

Spoiler alert: they got in.
