Duke
2022 - 9-4 (6-3)
2023 - 7-5 (4-4)

I raised this multiple times when he was getting hired and received multiple bans for it. His record was almost identical to Jimbo's in a weak conference.

He is exactly who we paid for…

Maybe he can surprise me and make a meaningful change at OC. And wow do I need to eat crow with Klein. Have to give him a massive amount of credit.

I agree with you. I'm no football expert but I was not excited about the hire.

Nobody wanted the job.

Top 5 expectations but nil money going to the buyout. I think we are ten million behind our rivals (Tu/lsu)

I'll give Elko credit with Duke. They were 2-9 and 3-9 the 2 seasons prior to him arriving there. He turned them around and got them a bowl win in both seasons.

Depends on the school. Duke had won 3 bowl games since 1960 before Elko. If Elko had Duke in the CFP he'd be at Alabama right now

Jimbo was on cruise control. He was not the same here the last couple of years as he was when he was at FSU or even the first 2-3 years here. It makes me wonder if the extensions our board gives caused coaches to go on autopilot since it happens with Jimbo and now looks to have happened with Elko.

Elko was a mistake. We should have hired Willie Fritz. He has turned around every program he has coached by year 3 and has taken them to a level of success they either have never had or had not had in a long time. He has the experience, the results and the blueprint for success.

Last year was a complete shock and I thought ohhh maybe we finally struck gold. What i expected was a guy who Aggies would be comfortable with and who'd hover around 6-9 wins a year. We think we're a championship level program but we still revere .500 coaches like they were priceless miracles of football wisdom. The people making the hires have 2 versions...1) big/flashy name 2) someone familiar. Not sure what that means for our next hire but I am already disappointed in it.

Who were the viable alternatives at the time? Who would have been the great coaching hires that weren't already locked into their current teams? You have to pick from what's on the menu and the menu at the time didn't include any elite choices. That the pool of available candidates was topped by Mark Stoops was already disappointing.

Bingo! Be turned out dog crap defense around under Jimbo and then turned around Duke in 1 season!! The guy clearly is a solid coach and we are so snake bitten by Fran, Sherman, Sumlin, and Jimbo that we literally jump off the cliff as soon as we have a few bad games. Elko just gave us 11-1 which is literally our best season in 32 years. And we play in the best conference the SEC. Let him make some adjustments for next year and we will be just fine.

Bro come on. He turned around Duke in 1 year which is a basketball school and took them to their first bowl game in like 30 years. How is that not an accomplishment?

I'm as frustrated as anyone

But I have to take a step back and realize last years class was his simi full year recruiting class and this one coming in next year is his full year 100% his relationship built recruiting class

I mean he's still playing with Fishers guys and transfers portal guys as the "leaders" of this team and whomever he could grab that hadn't committed yet in his first 2 years

I'll give him 2 years to get it right

And if not at least the next guy will have talent to work with
You fire Elko now and the next guy will have no talent because this recruiting class will most likely jet and we are starting from scratch again and be 3-4 years out again and the cycle will continue

More than half the teams that play college football go to bowls. They're utterly meaningless now and have been for 25 years at least.
They used to be actually meaningful.
There was a point in time that if you were in the Big 10 and didn't make the Rose Bowl, you didn't go to a bowl game. There's a reason schools listed bowl appearances so prominently at one point.

Jumbo sucked and deserved to be canned. Hiring elko was fine - nothing wrong with taking a flyer on a promising coach who's done well in a lower league - but the idiot extension that made him unfirable for 2-3 years was a disaster.

The HC extensions after ONE "great" season continue to perplex the AD/ Athletic Department that make these dice roll decisions. No other industry does this except college HC jobs and Texas A&M leads the CFB landscape in creating these asinine extensions. Add to this CFB players getting NIL money for not even proving their productivity/ worth: A&M really leads the country in being chumps for dishing out money with little/ poor return on investment. Oh well, here's to another rebuilding year in 2026 w/ an under performing HC/ Team...smh.

Yep. I find it hard to believe any established, winning coach would want to come here.

This place is a graveyard for coaching careers.

Only guys we are going to get are retreads or up and coming guys being given their first shot at a head coaching job.

No offense, but this assumption is such tired old trope.

Will Stein is coaching at Kentucky, a basketball school, with almost no advantages on the football side, with literally zero of his own players.

He's winning. In the SEC.

A good coach will beat you with his players, and then turn around and beat you with yours.

They are all division 1 scholarship football players.

The whole, "I need to get my players in here" excuse is just that... An excuse.

You're assuming an OC can make the QB throw accurate passes. That said, it would be interesting to know whether Elko would actually allow the OC to make the decision on which QB should play.

OC receiving OJT at this level is questionable at best, but with 2026 Reed somewhat hard to judge. I think the biggest issue / question is what offense are we running? An OC is supposed to have an offense, his offense. Wiggins was a lifetime position coach, doubt he has "his" offense. Regardless……

The TEAM is not bad, the D is good enough, the OL is good enough (though average at best), the skill position players are good enough, there is only one position that is not good enough, and that is QB.

With better QB play to just a marginal acceptable level we are 5-3.

This will be corrected in the off-season. Still a huge mistake by Elko to not have any viable option behind Reed (he could get injured) to plug in to get more production from the position with Reed struggling so bad in multiple games.

I expect wholesale changes on offense both staff and players, players focused on QB and OL.

Defense is fine and improving with some young guys developing.

That was a LONG time ago. 1974 was the last year that "system" was in place. (Idiotic to say the least).

It was also a tremendous outlier. There WERE, obviously, fewer bowls then -- 11 to be exact in 1974. But Miami of Ohio, of all teams, played Georgia in the Tangerine Bowl -- and BEAT them!!

3 SWC teams (Baylor, t.u., and tech) and a 4th soon to be SWC team (Cougar High) played in bowl games that year. The SEC had 7. I agree that bowls are now meaningless and have been for at least the time period you mention (I would argue longer). However, I don't agree that they were that prominent back then -- at least not the minor ones. No one even knows that tech played Vandy to a tie in the Peach Bowl that year (nor do they care).

At the time, I was saying slow down on firing Jimbo unless we have a homerun ready to go, like Lanning, Kiffin, DeBoer, Dan Campbell.

After it was clear that wasn't the case, I was all aboard the Glenn Schumann train. Key words with him are championship potential. Yeah, he was probably too young, and there might have been some growing pains, but his potential upside in my view was growing up to be the next Kirby.

My thoughts on Elko were he was a good coach without championship potential. Probably more qualified than Schumann, but had never lifted a trophy, and therefore doesn't know what it takes.

When Traylor/Stoops names started getting thrown around, I was thrilled to end up with Elko.

Looking back, I stand by it. Shouldn't have fired Jimbo without have a clear plan, and once you got beyond the homerun tier, should have take a flier on a cheap, high potential upside guy.

With the same principles as last time in mind, and added money issues, I say don't fire Elko pretty much unless Dan Campbell calls. If 27 and 28 come and go without a 9 win season, move on, and offer Schumann $6MM/year. At that point, we are only in Jimbo/Elko debt the first 3 years of the new coaches term.
