I find it very interesting (and telling) when people complain about his play calling. His role **should** go far beyond play calling duties. He's not playing ncaa26 and just picking which plays to run. The job of an offensive coordinator is to COORDINATE the entire offense. That job starts in the spring in a meeting room with the other position coaches and he has been out of his depth since then. The problem with hiring him had nothing to do with his play calling. A true offensive coordinator is responsible for designing, developing and implementing offensive scheme and identity. You can tell from some of Elkos pressers since spring ball by some of the little comments he's made that Wiggins isn't doing those things well.
When people say the problem is the plays he's calling that's like saying my CPA sucks because he's not good at filing my tax returns. That's the least of my worries. The problem is the lack of experience actually coming up with and implementing the plan. The play calling is the end result of the planning and offensive identity.
As a former offensive coordinator at the HS level, you want to know a little secret? There were games where I'd let my position coaches take over the play calling duties and didn't see a single change in offensive efficiency because guess what, I had done the job on Sunday, and Monday and Tuesday and in spring ball establishing offensive identity to the point anyone associated with our program could call plays. That's the fun part.
