That is the ONE question that needs to be asked of Elko at a press conference.

Most teams don't bc anyone legit goes to another school so he can play and get paid. The market for quality QBs is too much for a school to be able to pay them multiple years on the bench.

Which is why Saban quit.

Obviously, Elko was sold on last year's QB1. He didn't think he needed to worry about a QB2. He annointed an OC that was going to work with QB1 to maximize his skill set. It didn't work out - bad experiment. Now, both OC and QB1 need to be replaced. It looks like he's gonna ride with them both to the bottom, then re-emerge victorios next year with a new OC and a new QB1.

Next year... it's always next year.

I'm not complaint about the state of the game. It is by far better now than when a team like Bama monopolized talent.

I'm just pointing out that stupid posts such as these are not relative to the present landscape.

Any question that can be answered yes/no is a boring question. A better question would be, "How can a team maintain reliable offensive performance if their starters aren't able to perform optimally?"

NOT TRUE at all. By credible backup, most would understand it NOT to be a sure- fire starting QB, but rather someone who can come in as necessary and run the offense and give their team a chance to win some games.

And there are plenty of good QBs who would jump at the chance for a legitimate shot to be the back-up QB/QB in waiting for a team projected to be top 10 and compete for a NC.

To be a team with A&M's resources and not have that is pretty much inexcusable.

There are literally dozns and dozens of QBs who fit this bill.

To not have one is inexcusable.
To have one and not play him when obviously needed is also inexcusable.

THATS why I would love to hear his answer. And With due respect,
if you consider the question dumb, you are not a very deep thinker. It's actually a question so cutting I don't think he'd answer it, but his response would be quite revealing.

you COMPLETELY whiffed here. A yes OR a no equally would be a bombshell:

He either admits he went into a season without that,
or he admits he HAS that but wont play him.

You think that would be boring, then you don't understand the dynamics we're dealing with.

As a lawyer- I can say yes/no questions are the only way to avoid bullsht artists from avoiding the question.

If we DO have a credible backup QB- why isn't he playing?!

If we do NOT have a credible backup QB- then wtf were you thinking going into the offseason not desperately looking for one?!

Name a backup qb on a top 5 team off of the top of your head. You can't.

Hypothetically, A&M and every other top spender in CFB could have a bunch of backup QBs of starter potential. Reality is that most QBs in the portal are looking for starting jobs and whoever isn't picked up already won't be guaranteed better than any option you have in house already. Why not just spend the money elsewhere and maintain continuity with the guys already on your roster and your hs recruits?

We're seeing huge shifts in offenses in the NFL, specifically at qb. The young QBs entering the league haven't refined any real skills since they jump from program to program or their offensive coaches are changing every year. There's a reason most backup QBs in the nfl are long time vets passed their primes (Keenum, Winston, dalton, wentz, Flacco, tua, etc). Heck, some starters are like that (Rodgers, Brissett, Watson, Geno, Cousins).

That's why we hired Wiggins and kept Reed - to keep some semblance of continuity offensively. Nobody thinks he's an NFL qb, but he had a high ceiling last year and nobody expected this regression.

But who would we realistically have taken out of the portal at qb that would mitigate the disaster had Reed been injured, let alone regressed like he has? Seriously, name someone realistic that you wouldn't have *****ed about us taking last year. Who would have been worth having over taking an extra o lineman or Horton?

You're right, it is SUCH a rare thing to see a backup QB come in and run a team. almost never happens.

you are right that I cant name ANY backup QBs, and probably only 9 or 10 starters. [Well i guess i can name Miles O'Neill at NC) If THATS your criteria for an argument, you've already lost.

It is rare for a team with a backup to compete for the playoffs and national titles. Oregon was a lot of people's pick to win it all this year. OKst game was played with their starter, but their backup qb, who was former 5star starter at Nebraska was not good last week and they will likely not compete for a playoff spot.

I'm just saying the team was probably going to be hopeless without Reed regardless of who we brought in due to the dearth of depth at backup qb across the sport. The only chances we had at qb were for Reed to improve or to cut him loose and pursue a new starter. Hindsight has proven the latter as probably a better option, but again, we went all-in with Reed in hopes he can improve. He was okay last season - not good, but serviceable - and we banked on improvement.

And being able to name a backup is a good indicator of how good/promising they are. There's not a lot of depth out there on any team.

We don't even KNOW whether we have another QB on the roster that could come in an do well. I really doubt Elko truly knows as he is unwilling to try even when the starter is horrendous far too often.

I still bet L-ko tried to get a new qb and it didn't work out. When that didn't work, he spent the money elsewhere. Whiffing on where all non qb money went is the inexcusable error.

And, credit where it is due, L-ko isn't burying his backup qb. Obviously he knows the kid either isn't ready, or isn't good enough. Coach is refusing to come out in the media and kick dirt on him. That is commendable. I know he wants to say that the backup sucks so he is sticking with Reed, but he has chosen the high road, even though it makes him look bad. Gotta acknowledge the good stuff from him too.
