USA Today - wrote a piece about failure addiction and the cesspool, a few weeks ago.
The basic opinion is that all the money and horse trading in CFB has set an expectation that unless a team wins the natty, the fans turn sour, creating the now famous word cesspool.

This new version of CFB works for the media it enriches the players and coaches, but the customers are miserable. The bigger question is how long before the customers give up.

The pursuit of profit killed it. Bowl games are glorified scrimmages thanks to the playoffs. NIL makes the product worse. It's one thing after another.
Give me the guy who shoots for excellence and fails over the guy who shoots for mediocrity and succeeds.

I don't care one iota about the players anymore.

I do care about our university and winning.

But I have no connection to hired mercenaries making more money in a year than many do in forever.

This, along with the march to sully, has cause me to emotionally detach from the team. From the game.

I would rather have a semi pro nfl farm league where players could get paid for their services and have a scholarship student athlete league for the universities, rather than the garbage we have now.

If I had not attended and graduated from A&M, I would not give a flip about our team at this point.

As it is, I only care because A&M is my alama mater. That's it. I hate this current iteration of college football. I stopped caring about and watching professional ball years ago. I already just watch our games on replay. And I am very close to not even bothering with that. I'll just wait and see if we make the playoffs and watch then. Again, why should I care about a bunch of overpaid kids who don't give a flip about my university?

Sad.

We used to have season tickets (4) but gave them up for our kids' education. I told my family that collegiate sports just don't do it for me anymore. The money, mercenary mindset of players and coaches, the production of games, the sensationalizing and overhyping of pretty much any random game has diminished the overall appeal to me. No longer is the emphasis on student athlete but rather win at all costs, bend or exploit the rules to gain any sort of advantage.

I understand its impossible to put the genie back in the bottle but I would rather we, either at A&M only or as collegiate body, impose our own spending limits and say we are going to focus on developing and preparing young men and women to succeed in the future.

I am not saying go cheap but instead of spending $40M+ on rosters each year, we spend $20-25M, and just let the results be what they are. Sure we want to win but we are no longer going to try to buy everything. If that means an 8-4, 7-5 record, OK. But no more of this spending top dollar on everything, coaches, players, facilities, etc... only to say we need to step up and do more each and every year. Take that pressure off because A&M has made some really dumb decisions financially with regard to coaches and player salaries. Put the value back on the education, the A&M degree, and life after college versus win at all costs. Get kids that want to be an Aggie, not just because we paid the most. We used to sell this to recruits less than 10 years ago, let's go back to that.

I am sure there are many that disagree and will flame away, but I am betting there are a few who think the same.

Not wrong. The days of scholarships being about poor kids being able to grit their way into a college education are long, long gone. And as long as people continue to support the system, it will never change.

Evergreen: it costs around 15k/year to take a family of four to every home game, all things taken into consideration. That could buy three, four, or even five short Disney cruises out of Galveston (per Google Gemini). Better still, if you cannot give up watching, then stay home and put that money into a low-fee S&P500 fund, set all dividends to reinvest, and come back to me in fifteen years. The Ags will likely still be the Ags, but you will have enjoyed (?) them from home in comfort the whole time AND have more money in the wallet by a substantial margin.

I don't necessarily agree that winning a NC is the only acceptable outcome for what's termed a successful season but making the playoffs certainly is. It's become the main metric amongst all the talking heads. Every conversation includes "playoff chances" starting with game 1. Any team outside the current 12 team playoff will not be considered as having a successful season.

Well, even in this era of exorbitant coaching salaries and NIL spending, the overall combined record of teams is unchanged at .500. It is inevitable that some teams spending huge $ will have losing records. The only thing that has changed is the money, and fan intolerance for it.

This is my story, except I don't care at all if the team out there wins or loses, since they don't have any tangible connection to A&M, the University. I encourage you to keep up the fight and influence others around you that we are all living out an obscene lie.

Yeah if I'm not mistaken, the Arkansas football NIL budget is between $20-25 million, and look what that has gotten them. Unfortunately that range is cheap.

I get the overall sentiment though.

I also agree with the earlier poster that a national championship win isn't necessarily the expectation for every team. I would've been happy with another playoff appearance and thrilled with anything beyond that. Now our best case scenario is being bowl eligible, and I'm afraid it will soon be just to score a touchdown against a ranked team.

Well written. This is exactly how I feel and have felt about the program starting back with Mond and the BLM fiasco.

I see a sport that has changed enough that we are starting to see real parity. No longer are the top teams staking QBs and linemen.

Fans are having a hard time adjusting. I believe it will help in the long run but is a tough pill to swallow when a staff misses on QBs and key player needs.

A&M will not be the last team to drop off the map after a successful year. However, it's been proven that teams can make huge leap in a single year, too.

They need to at least limit the number of transfers and the transfer window. There is no reason LSU should have had players transferring in so close to opening week. No more special anything for any team regardless of the excuses.

The effeciency of off-season system implementation will determine how teams get transfers up to speed. Cignette seems to have exceptionally efficient camps. He knows something about how to increase effective learning and focus. He has stated they don't give players a second rep at a play if they mess up. The play is run once and they move to the next. That surely increases focus.

Now that the players are semi-pro, the number of practices and hours needs to be increased. That's complicated because it will be a negative on athletes that are true students.

Maybe, but I believe Saban did the exact opposite. I know for a fact that Saban was out on the practice field telling his players to "keep doing it until you can't do it wrong." That is a direct quote -- not a paraphrase.

If that's true (about the approach), which one is right?

This is the problem we get into: Saban was successful doing things his way, so we assume that MUST be the way. Then, someone else comes along -- Dabo, then Kirby, Day, now Cignetti -- and they all do things differently from Saban with somewhat similar results (maybe not as consistent, but they win). People are like, OK, let's do it that way or...

When you look closely at it, you realize that Dabo, Kirby, Day, and Cignetti, didn't make a wholesale copy of Saban. We don't need a wholesale copy of any of them. I think we know more about what doesn't work than what does (e.g. sticking with the wrong QB -- Mond/Reed; lack of attention to defense -- Sumlin; too complicated of an offense, at least for the QB -- Jimbo; lack of creativity on offense and letting your assistants coach-- Slocum; and excessive stubbornness and a refusal to change -- all of the above, including Elko).

Now: do/did any of the coaches I mentioned above (when they were winning, at least) have really ANY of these qualities? Or, at least, more than 1? (Keep in mind there's a huge difference in some stubbornness being the difference between 12-1 vs. 11-2 and winning 9 or 10 games vs. 4).

Saban had a huge roster advantage.

I don't know but there is some science to not repeating mistakes over and over in a short timeframe during learning phases. Once you make the mistake a couple of times, you move on or walk away and the subconscience works through things. Then come back later to work on it again, and repeat.
I think the idea for Cignetti could be focus during learning phases is more important than repetition.

he also claims to not practice full contact too much, which goes against almost all coaches.

I will say that his team last year executed on another level. He may be placing a priority on keeping the players nervous system rested which outside of less violent contact may also help decrease injury. I don't think he had the depth the other top five teams had.

Saban did not focus on winning or scoreboards. That's the whole point.

1.) He understood the details of how to accomplish what you want in the game, and he forced perfection in every detail.

2.) He knew how to convey that message to the fans, the team, the players, the admin, the whole damn state.

3.) He did not allow naysayers, malcontents, or anyone that wasn't interested in being all in. He sold the buy in.

4.) The winning and NC is the result of these efforts, not the goal.

We have a huge issue at A&M and it starts heavily with dumbass boosters and BMA. We have everything we need to win except the attention to detail, refusal of accepting sloppy work, and buy in of every one at every level of the organization. We still treat our football program like a game and not like a business.

We are mediocre. We have always been mediocre, and we will always be mediocre until this changes. This is the recipe for success for literally everything in life...football, marriage, sales, you name it. You create consistency and hard work on the small things and the big things work out.

Again, we have everything we need. But, when it gets hard, we freak out, dumbass boosters want instant results, and we fire everyone and start over.

Fisher could have been great. He knew the system. He just didn't have the drive and stamina to maintain it.

It's a mess, for sure. The INSANE amounts of money being spent has created unreal expectations for the fan bases of all but a few schools. It's soured me on the sport. I hardly get enjoyment from watching the playoffs or any regular season game that would normally have huge amounts of hype. Definitely freed up my Saturdays.

I see the same in youth sports. It's not about the kids getting better or the school (or league or team) they're representing, it's about the glitz and the glam, and how many $400 bats you have in your 'back pack' that you can barely lift.
