Since the Cesspool comment is dominating everything about the post game press conference. He did make one statement I found very interesting. He mentioned how he gave up play calling a few weeks ago. I would say over the last 2 weeks the defense, especially from a structural standpoint and speed of play... looks vastly improved. Not perfect but you can see progress on that side of the ball, unlike the other side. We are using the Nickel in more ways than I can ever remember in previous years and look willing to adjust our front in tandem with the back end. The sad part is because the offense is so inept it won't matter but I found it telling when he said he gave up the play calling. But if our offense can't stay on the field or produce any sort production its just a matter of time each game until the "dam breaks." Which I think is unfortunate from a stat line perspective because it will always look like they didn't improve... but they did. I feel for those guys because they played hard and improved but just for another disappointing loss.

Going to be a long year fellas just wanted to point out one of the very few positives I saw. Davis-Swain had himself a game, Byard is a missile, and Sanford looked like himself again.

He's in his CEO-era now.

RC's version was "it's my job to coach the coaches" when things went south.

Something has to change on offense, I know the OC Wiggins hire was questionable but honestly the Joey Lynch hire was the one that made me very uncomfortable with the offseason moves. But my point about this post was I was fairly confident Coach Hemphill was a competent coordinator and would help us on the back end in coverage, especially coverage concepts. Which would only happen if we could use the nickel in different ways…like using them as the 7th defender tied to the box at times. Which I actually started to see a few times in the past 2 games. I think if they stay motivated the defense will continue to improve.

Offensively we are completely lost. Left guard is our weak sister upfront. Marcel has lost all his confidence and won't set his feet or step up in the pocket to save his life (that's the qb coach). When he does deliver the ball, we are dropping it. What really bothered me was in the Arkansas game we got in our ace formation and looked competent and the mizzou game…none of it. We look like we have no base offense. What I mean is the first things you install in spring… i literally couldn't even guess what that is watching us. It's bad…real bad and it's layers of bad too.

Kid played so good, violent off the ball. He was fun to watch in that abortion of a game.

I watched a completely inept offense beat the #1 team in the country yesterday, simply by not being awful for all 4 quarters. Mateer is still a train wreck, but he displays basic competence at stepping up in the pocket, throwing the ball on time, etc. It was like their offense had actually been coached. Like, as in, they actually improved after the Michigan game. The regression of Reed is completely shocking. He had multiple 10+ yard gains available just by stepping up, but he bails out now like a 4th string PAT holder being chased by coked up Lawrence Taylor.

Oh, and, consider this my CESSPOOL check-in today.

Oh I know I was watching the unlimited version of the game and was saying out loud "step up Marcel" as the crosser was coming open..instead he retreated and took off to the right and I felt sick because I knew he was going to do it but was hoping to see him not. And you're not wrong that should be drilled by the position coach and preached to him. After 2 years of better play by him….it leads me to believe that it's not being coached into him and he is hearing all the chatter of needed to run more…which I am not against but it's like a confluence of things that are leading to the worst possible outcome. And I mentioned Joey Lynch…that's why if they change QBs I'm not very confident we see better fundamentals from the other 2.

I appreciate the posts above because they really put the spotlight on the status of the team at this point in time. The defense was winning defense and restored some hope that Hemphill can get it done here.

What was puzzling to me, in addition to the revelation mentioned, was Elko not giving any positive comments on the defensive play. If ever a guy deserved at least some kudos, it was Byard, and Elko said nothing I recall. He seems like he's so desperate to try to take the spotlight off Reed's struggles that he puts out a message that we're not doing anything right and this situation will only deteriorate the longer he does this. We may not have the level of knowledge Elko does but the Reed situation is so glaring even the most casual fan can see it. And as long as it goes on, we're headed for a wasted season. Nobody can win with QB play like we've had.

Byard is the most instinctual safety we have by a mile. He is still getting comfortable knowing his keys but when he sees it there is no hesitation, dude is a missile. He was fun to watch yesterday considering some hiccups as he learns and improves.

You folks are way more knowledgeable about football than I am, but I think Elko is in a really tough spot. Yeah, he put himself there but in trying to do the right/good thing for a couple assistants, we're on the edge of the cliff. One promotion may work out and prove to be OK. The other has all the indications of a total disaster at this point. I can't comment on the QB coach but haven't seen anything from him to show that it has been a good choice. At this point in the season, what are his options?? Fire the OC? Send Lynch packing also? Judging from his appearance at the presser (he looked like he was about to blow a gasket), I'm guessing he knows he's screwed up bigtime but now sure what to do right at this moment. I'm not trying to make excused and, yes, he probably stepped on his crank with his comments.

Just some stuff from a now old Ag who went through one and two win seasons. Feel free to File 13 it.

To me the most interesting comment was when someone asked Elko if he was confident he could "right the ship" (or something to that effect), and Elko replied, "Does this look confident?"

I mean wtf. Never heard anything like that from a coach who wasn't fired within weeks

It's a dude getting paid north of ten mil to come up with answers and just has none. He's watching his career circle the drain in real time and knows the hole he dug is too deep to climb out of.

Thanks to that moronic contract extension, he'll get the chance to right the ship over the offseason, but he's going to have to completely revamp the offense and buy a new QB and either get better Olinemen from the portal or hope our young guys develop.

He's coming completely unraveled because he has no idea how to fix any part of the mess he's created in time for it to matter.

Some coaches are meant to be good coordinators but go no further than that. I believe Elko to be one of those.

I know you've been raising this issue for weeks. You mentioned how there seemed to be a mismatch in scheme between the front-end and back-end on defense. Especially in how we used our d-line and then how we aligned our secondary. I think you mentioned how either Elko needed to entirely take it over on defense or entirely give it up to Hemphill. To Elko's credit he gave it up to Hemphill and starting with Arkansas our defense has looked more like we expected. With a competent offense we win the Mizzou game. I too caught that comment on Saturday and then yesterday he hammered it home.

I know I criticized Hemphill but I think I and others owe him an apology. Looks like when given autonomy he's pretty good. I think Elko may have found his DC. In my mind this points to him wanting to be a CEO head coach, which in this day is a requirement. There is way to much that demands the attention of the head coach for them to be totally absorbed in one part of the organization.

I do think Elko is an attention to details type of guy and this season is killing him but I do think he is learning some very valuable lessons. We'd be smart to accept those growing pains rather than cut bait.

The biggest wtf moment was when he said he didn't think Hart could offer a better chance to win

You're literally trotting out a qb the defense knows can't complete a 5 yard pass to save his life & the head coach thinks that's our best option?

Mind numbing

Not really the point of this thread because we're focusing on the fact that Elko gave up defensive play calling which is a big revelation.

However, I think Elko's comment about Hart and other comments about the disconnect in what they are seeing in practice indicate that Reed is executing in practices. The coaches are caught in that trap of a player doing everything right in practice and then falling apart in a game. I bet that Reed looks great compared to Hart and Casuga in practice. However, it is clear that it doesn't matter what Reed does in practice because he can't execute at game time.

Yesterday, reading between the lines. it sounds like some evaluation of the QB position and things surrounding it are now happening.

His comments the other day about this gave hope we can correct it. He didn't have to but he said how him calling it was actually causing issues.. it takes a lot for a coach who's background is defense to say something like that publicly and I have an immense amount of respect for him saying that and following through. I really think we will continue to see the defense improve and as Lyle continues to tie his scheme together from the front to the back end I would venture to say we will see the pass rush improve as well. Now if we could only get an offense to start on the same path of progression going forward.

Coney (Tulsa) and Byard (Colorado), Scourton (Purdue) combined with our mediocre OL play, certainly begin to make the case that we should avoid SEC transfers unless they were proven starters. In other words, if you can't cut it in the SEC, you should down-cycle to a lesser league instead of coming to A&M. Am I off base or actually onto something?
