In 2014, Ohio State lost starting QB Braxton Miller before the season.
J.T. Barrett stepped in and had an incredible year… then broke his ankle against Michigan.
So Ohio State turned to its THIRD-STRING QB, Cardale Jones.
What happened next?
Beat Wisconsin 590 in the Big Ten Championship
Beat #1 Alabama in the College Football Playoff
Beat Oregon 4220 for the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Ohio State went all the way to QB3 and still won it all.
Fast-forward to today, in the NIL and transfer-portal era, and somehow the Aggies can't even have ONE dependable backup QB ready to step in?
If Ohio State could build championship-level depth three quarterbacks deep in 2014, how are we struggling to have a reliable QB2 today?
I agree this is a terrible job by our staff (I worry it is more about terrible coaching vs terrible recruits)
But that 2014 situations is way less likely to happen now.
Back then kids couldn't generally transfer without sitting out a year and NIL wasn't a thing.
So kids would sit and wait their turn at a school like OSU.
Also, OSU coaching had a lot to do with them all being prepared, IMO.
Now days, those kids would bolt in a heartbeat because they could get paid and start the next year.
It is HARDER to do than now than in 2014.
